January 6 is a reminder of the consequences of weak leadership in those making community, moderation, trust, safety, and policy decisions. Sometimes from people in those roles - and sometimes from the bosses they report to.

Public interest exemptions - and the bending of policy for users with big followings, for fear of losing them - helped set the stage for Donald Trump to ascend to the presidency.

The whole Grok creating nonconsensual sexualized images thing has me thinking about the one really loud "community" pro who made a point to respond to my Twitter exit in 2022.

He told me how I was doing it "for [my] brand" and about the great (nonsense) strides Musk had made on CSAM. He really wanted to get into Musk's good graces.

Repealing Section 230 is a mistake at a time where we just can't afford to make one. The Trump administration is corrupt and vindictive and will use the removal of 230 as a catalyst to bully online communities and platforms, small and large, to cater to their whims.

I have no idea why Sen. Whitehouse cannot see this. That even if you think there are issues with 230, NOW IS NOT THE TIME.

A screenshot of a social media post by the Senate Judiciary Democrats US account (@judiciarydems.senate.gov). The post text reads, "Sen. WHITEHOUSE: We finally are moving to file a bipartisan Section 230 repeal bill. Waiting any longer serves no useful purpose." Below the text is a video still showing Senator Sheldon Whitehouse seated at a hearing table behind a nameplate that reads "MR. WHITEHOUSE." He is wearing glasses, a brown tweed jacket, and a green sweater vest, looking down while speaking. The post is dated December 12, 2025.

I was watching a series of TikTok videos where a woman discussed her efforts to track down and hold accountable a man who left a horrendous, highly offensive comment on one of her videos, from his business account.

She has reported the man's behavior to groups that he is a member of, licensing agencies for his business, and other relevant professional parties.

#ShamelessPlug Over the last few weeks, a few folks have asked me via DM what I do for a living, apart from my daily photo blog posts over here, so I thought, for my 300th post, I'd try to describe briefly what I have been working on… Coincidentally, we just celebrated our 2nd year anniversary on November 15th 🎉🥳🍾

Here it goes:

At http://asynco.org, we’re a community of people, i.e. a collective, who care about how we work and connect, especially, in asynchronous and distributed environments. If you’re looking for genuine exchange and thoughtful company in a safe and trustworthy environment, there’s a place for you with us, whenever you’re ready to join the conversation. Just get in touch and we’ll talk more 😎👍🏻

YouTube is caving to pressure from Jim Jordan to unban creators who had repeatedly violated community guidelines tied to COVID-19 and election integrity-related content. Just like many of those involved in January 6, a group of folks will now be given a redo. They will once again cause harm.

This is leading to speculation that Alex Jones and Nick Fuentes will return to the platform.

A screenshot of a tweet from "Rep. Jim Jordan" with the handle @Jim_Jordan. The tweet, dated September 23, 2025, reads:

"But that’s not all. YouTube is making changes to its platform to prevent future censorship.

YouTube is committing to the American people that it will NEVER use outside so-called 'fact-checkers' to censor speech.

No more telling Americans what to believe and not believe."

Below the main text of the tweet, a screenshot of an email from an attorney representing Google is visible. The quoted text is partially cut off but says, "ast to other large platforms, YouTube has not operated a fact-check identifies and compensates fact-checking partners to produce content ion. YouTube has not and will not empower fact-checkers to take a tent across the Company's services." The total view count for the tweet is "122.4K Views."

I learn a lot about your content moderation philosophy based upon how your community guidelines apply to the internet's villain of the day.

There was this maker culture going on at the same time. As Howard Rheingold put it once, it was where the tool makers meet the tool users. In addition to being a place where people can converse, it was also a kind of birthplace of a sort of online gift economy.” -John Coate, Former Marketing Director and Conference Manager, The WELL

When researchers at the University of Zurich conducted psychological experiments on the Change My View community without consent, it was one human space taking advantage of another human space, which made it even worse, according to Logan MacGregor, a volunteer moderator in the community.

“One thing that’s really special about Change My View is that it’s a human space; it’s a decidedly human space. … The University of Zurich is a decidedly human space. What I think is so insidious about AI is it’s caused people to behave in ways that I don’t know we would have ... because it’s a toxic influence. Unlike the bots that are invading us daily, that we’re constantly shutting down. … That hurts a little bit more than just dealing with bots, because this wasn’t just bots. These are people interacting with other people, and there was a human element there.” -Logan MacGregor, Moderator (Volunteer), r/changemyview

When you are expanding your online community into a new country, you should examine the verbiage you are currently using. Locally-minded adjustments can help members feel more at home. Here's an example:

“A lot of [ILTA's] material has the word attorney, which doesn’t exist in the UK. We have solicitors and barristers. … There are little tweaks around the material and our language that we’ve had to do in order to localize what we’re providing to [the UK] region. … It’s a big deal to people.” –Mercedes Oppon-Kusi, Former Community Manager, International Legal Technology Association

“I think part of providing a good experience is less hurdles to jump over. If you have an open community, then people can find [your] content because it’s indexed by external search engines. Not only that, but if they just visit your community, they can poke around and read the content without feeling like they’re trapped into [creating an account]. Some people don’t want to do that. ...

Even though the internet may be full of bad comments, that doesn't mean that the one you are about to post won't cause harm. After researchers conducted a psychological experiment on an online community without consent, they seemed to believe that, since their comments were just like any other, there was not a great risk of harm.

“So much of what [the researchers] did to try to prevent harm was to say ‘comments like this happen all the time online, we don’t think that it’s going to cause individual trauma.’ We kind of dispute that because some of the comments are [you] pretending to be a trauma counselor and maybe that could actually cause some harm. … I don’t think they thought enough about community impact until after the community screamed ‘ouch.'” -Logan MacGregor, Moderator (Volunteer), r/changemyview

“I’ve always tried to think like a chameleon. Whenever you go into a company, they’re going to put you where they think you belong. … This is just another version of that question of where does the community person belong? For me, it’s can you have a satisfactory job? Because if you don’t have a satisfactory job, in my opinion, if you’re not happy working, that’s the time to question your job. But if you can have a job that you’re satisfied with and have the impact you want, it doesn’t matter where they put you.” -Craig Dalrymple, Community Consultant; Formerly Project Management Institute, Zynga, and Sony
