An amusing meme about the formatting of medieval manuscripts in which texts often open with massively enlarged decorative initials. The base image of the meme is a photo of a young man clad in a t-shirt and sitting at a white formica table. Arranged before him are a carton of milk, a box of Cocoa Puffs cereal, and a bowlful of the cereal. Entirely straight-faced, the man is attempting to eat the cereal with a massive silver spoon—one probably as long as he is tall. The spoon’s bowl is twice the size of his own head, dwarfing the little bowl of Cocoa Puffs. The spoon is labelled ‘Manuscript initials’ and the cereal is labelled ‘the word’.

@histodons OK, clearly there is interest in trying to rebuild something like RetroReveal. What I need from you all is some idea in how you used it with manuscripts (where were not the primary use.)

Especially re: color spaces. You know how RR had those different filters, like RGBW, YQ1Q2, YUV_Y, LSHLab, etc.? Which did you use with MSS, and did you ever customize a color space? Post here or email marksaltveit at gmail. Thanks!

Specifically, the software is ImageJ, created for the US National Institutes of Health, and the Color Transformer plugin by Maria E. Barilla. She has since upgraded that to Color Transormer 2, presumably a better choice.

RetroReveal was mostly used by stamp collectors to work with cancellation stamps; there might be ways to do this better suited to medieval scribes' ink and parchment. #histodons #palaeography #codicology
