We went for a walk along the Wadden Sea near #Butjadingen today. Highlight of our last day here: we spotted two #seals in the wild, chilling in the salt marshes of #LangwarderGroden šŸ˜ 🦭
(The red colouration is probably due to iron staining)

A medium-angle outdoor shot shows two seals in a body of water, with a grassy bank in the background. The water in the salt marshes is grey and rippled from the wind. On the left, a vibrant green strip of reeds or tall grass emerges from the water, separating the two seals. The seal on the left is a reddish-brown colour, partially submerged and appearing to lie on its back or side, with its head and flippers visible above the water. To the right, further out in the water, a grey seal is mostly submerged, with only its head and part of its back visible as it lies flat on the surface. The background consists of a low, flat bank covered in lush green grass, with a hint of a darker, perhaps muddy, strip at the water's edge. The sky is not visible, and the light is soft and even.

Look who came to see us off as we descended the steps to the boat leaving Island on Sunday! A Common (Phoca vitulina), who seemed to be fascinated by us landlubbers. We of course were delighted to see and photograph this marvellous marine .

Photo of a Common (or Harbour) Seal in the sea next to Skomer Island. The animal is in a vertical position in the water, with his or her head above the surface. The head is round, with a relatively short muzzle bearing a dozen or so thick, white whiskers on each side. More whiskers (shorter in length and just two or three in number) can be seen above each of the large, black eyes. Below the water the top half of the seal’s body can be seen, with a flipper on each side. The skin is largely grey in colour with hints of pink or brown in places; it is darker on the nose and on the top of the head, and paler on the undersides of the flippers. At the bottom right corner of the image is a dark shape – a rocky projection at the bottom of the cliff.

A common or harbour seal pup, admiring its reflection in the calm waters of the sea loch.

Actually it was waiting for high tide before swimming off, but the image suggests otherwise.

The birth of these seals is helpful for the white-tailed eagles here on Mull, as the eagles make a meal of the afterbirth, and because they're messy to eat often makes their white tails, red.

A common or harbour seal pup, waiting for the tide to come back in, before swimming out of the sea loch. This photograph appears to show the seal pup admiring its reflection in the calm water. From the Isle Of Mull.
