@compfu I went to the #qoty25 event yesterday evening which took place at #ComputerSpieleMuseum in the room they have a special exhibition about games and movies. Fate of Atlantis was one of the few playable exhibits there. I really loved the game when it came out, and replayed it a few years ago. The predecessor, Last Crusade, was one of my very first PC games ever, still on a monochrome amber monitor.

Vor 40 Jahren wurden unsere Lieblingsklempner Super, als sie Ihren Weg in das Pilzkönigreich fanden. Seitdem laufen die Super Mario Bros. ununterbrochen von links nach rechts über unsere Bildschirme, hüpfen auf Gegnern herum und sammeln Münzen.

Studierende der Hochschule Macromedia haben, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Computerspielemuseum Berlin, ein Spiel entwickelt, in dem die Putzkraft Rosie und der Roboter BeBe Rätsel im Museum lösen müssen. The Poly-Play is the only video game machine to have been produced in the GDR. The Poly-Play was primarily distributed to privileged institutions such as leisure centres run by the confederation of trade unions. Just over 1,000 machines were built before the demise of the East German regime. Each machine cost approximately 35,000 East German marks.

The Pong arcade machine is widely considered to be the springboard for the emerging video game industry. Its pivotal position not only relates to the machine’s huge commercial success, but also to the fact that Nolan Bushnell and his partner Ted Dabney founded the first company dedicated to producing video games: Atari. The success of Pong was so overwhelming that various copies of the arcade machine appeared on the market in a very short space of time.

However, Atari remained the market leader in video games until the 1980s. Bushnell believed in an innovative and liberal management policy, giving developers the freedom to explore their own creativity. Thus, in the early 1970s, Atari became a magnet for all young people who had an interest in working with computers.

Computer Space was the first computer game to be produced in series. Like the Galaxy Game, it was a replica of Spacewar!. However, unlike Spacewar!, there was no complete computer inside. The game was built into an existing circuit. The output device was a customary television set, which cost much less than the computer monitors available in those days.

Computer Space was produced by the arcade game manufacturer Nutting. It was developed by Ted Dabney (USA) and Nolan Bushnell (USA). The two men had recently founded the company Syzygy, which listed its business objective as the “development of video game machines.”
