Corfe is an old word for a gap between the hills, and this castle long controlled that gate to the Isle of Purbeck

An ancient castle, slighted - that is blown up - after the Civil War, two towers remain in ruined condition on top of the inner mound. A couple of people are in shot, in no important way, and the sky is blue with faint cloud, a nice summer day.

Postally unused.

Fairly good condition, with very slight corner bumps, but small crease to top left corner and a few light bends to top right.

The castle slighted* in 1646 after the Civil War.
Built by Normans, controlling the pass into the Isle of Purbeck.

(Corfe means gap, the gap in the hills)

* a large amount of gunpowder was detonated here and there to break things.

As you approach the entrance to #Corfe #Castle you see a row of #displayboards obviously written to keep #younger #visitors amused.

978 It is thought that in this year Edward the Martyr was murdered by his (very wicked) step mother Elfrida, at the site of the Old Hall. She offered him some wine then had him stabbed him in the back. Even then alcohol was bad for you. Beneath the sign is a metal cut out showing a dagger and crown.

Sign reads:
1220-1294 During this time at the castle the inhabitants went about their daily lives. Henry III and Edward I made many home improvements and modernised the defences such as building the South West Gatehouse. Hard hats and health and safety? No chance!

Sign reads:
1199-1214 King John imprisoned his French niece, Eleanor of Brittany at Corfe Castle. She survived but 22 of her knights were not so lucky. When you walk past the Butavant Tower you might hear their ghostly screams as they starved in a dungeon below.
