“We attack at dawn,” said the barbarian leader.

“What do we do until then?” asked a young barbarian. It was his first raid.

“Drink a lot. And sing, badly,” answered an old hand.

“Sometimes we fight each other when we’re drunk,” added another.

“What if instead of fighting each other, we... well, we cuddle? It’s a cold night.” the young man asked.

“I’d have to drink even more than usual if you want me to cuddle!” laughed the leader. others joined in laughing.

“Still,” he added thoughtfully. “it is a cold night.”

In the morning, the villagers were surprised to discover a cuddle puddle of barbarians just outside the palisade. They were snoring loudly, surrounded by a lingering smell of beer and unwashed bodies.

Later the barbarians woke up, one by one, moaning with hangovers. They discovered a reed cage full of clucking chickens. There was a scroll tied to the top.

“Boss, there’s words,” someone handed the scroll to the leader.

He read it out loud. “Here is something for you to eat on your way home. We’ve taken all your weapons.”
