Mit der ersten Singleauskopplung ihres 10. Albums „Wild Mood Swings“ (1996) beweisen The Cure zwei Tatsachen: Dass sie immer für eine musikalische Überraschung gut sind und dass sie einige ihrer besten Songs auf B-Seiten „versteckt“ haben. Immer wieder haben Robert Smith und seine Mitstreiter Songs gemacht, die nicht in ihr Konzept passten oder die Fans ein Stück weit verwirrten, bei „Wild Mood Swings“ schafften sie es mit einem ganzen Album. Und „The 13th“ setzt dem mit seinem Mariachi-Sound die Krone auf.
Der „Swing Radio Mix“ von „The 13th“, der auch auf dem Album enthalten ist, hat eine ungewöhnliche Instrumentierung, darunter lateinamerikanische Perkussion und Blechbläser. Das Schlagzeug wurde übrigens erstmals von Jason Cooper bedient, nachdem der langjährige Drummer Boris Williams die Band nach dem Album „Wish“ zusammen mit Pearl Thompson verlassen hatte. Das weitere Line-Up bestand aus Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Perry Bamonte (RIP) und Roger O’Donnell sowie einigen Gastmusikern an den Bläsern.
Bei den weiteren Songs auf der Maxi finde ich es unverständlich, warum diese nicht auf dem Album erschienen sind. „It used to be me“ ist ein düsterer, atmosphärischer Track mit typischen The-Cure-Elementen: melancholische Gitarren, dichte Synthesizer-Layers und ein treibender Bass. Der Song baut sich langsam auf und hat einen fast hypnotischen Charakter. „Ocean“ ist ein ruhiger, fast ambientartiger Track mit sanften Gitarren und einem gleichmäßigen, wellenartigen Rhythmus. Der Song wirkt sehr entspannt und fast tranceartig, was gut zum Titel passt. In „Adonais“ schließlich dominieren sanfte Gitarren, sphärische Keyboards und ein ruhiger, fast meditativer Rhythmus.
Die B-Seiten machen hier also den Reiz aus, diese sind Goth sei dank auf der Compilation „Join The Dots (B-Sides & Rarities 1978>2001 The Fiction Years)“ zu bekommen.

Today's random #Discogs choice Ash Ra Temple and Schwingungen 2011 CD reissue. 2nd album from the Krautrock, prog rock group. Track 1 a blues style affair, liked it. Track 2 interesting, the screaming vocals put me off. Track 3 an ambient quiet track, quite nice.

1993 war Lacrimosa noch ein Soloprojekt von Tilo Wolff, sogar die Plattenfirma Hall Of Sermon hatte er selbst gegründet, um seine Musik zu vermarkten. Nach den Alben „Angst“ (1991) und „Einsamkeit“ (1992) erschien die EP „Alles Lüge“ im Vorfeld des Albums „Satura“ (1993), ohne dass die Titel darauf berücksichtigt wurden. Die EP enthält das Titelstück in zwei Version, Original und Remix, einen Remix von „Diener eines Geistes“ vom Album „Einsamkeit“ sowie das vorher unveröffentlichte Instrumentalstück „Ruin“.
Die EP „Alles Lüge“ ist ein typisches Beispiel für Lacrimosas frühe Phase: düster, emotional aufgeladen und experimentell. Gleichzeitig deutet insbesondere das Titelstück den künftigen Weg von Lacrimosa an: weg von der minimalistischen und klassischen Instrumentierung, hin zu gitarrenlastigerer Musik, klanglich also ein Vorgriff auf die spätere Verschmelzung von Goth-Rock, Darkwave und Industrial, die mit dem vierten Album „Inferno“ (1995) begonnen wurde. Im Vergleich zu „Angst“ und „Einsamkeit“ wirkt „Alles Lüge“ erwachsener, rockiger, aber nicht weniger leidenschaftlich – eine gelungene Balance, die den Weg für die späteren, noch ambitionierteren Werke ebnet und die Entwicklung von Tilo Wolff dokumentiert.
Nach „Satura“ (1994) stieß dann die Finnin Anne Nurmi, vorher Sängerin und Keyboarderin bei Two Witches, dazu, die seitdem mit Tilo Wolff die einzige konstante Musikerin bei Lacrimosa ist.
