Was listening to the "Mellow Mix" of RadioParadise.com, as is my wont, and they just played S&G's "Bridge Over Troubled Water," which, even though it's sentimental and frightfully overwrought and tinny-sounding, always reminds me of a particularly sweet personal moment in 1970 or so,

Then, as is *their* wont, RadioParadise.com played Doc & Merle doing "Windy and Warm," which was rounded it off perfectly. youtube.com/watch?v=cw2Dn9a8sQ4

I was watching old Dylan videos on YouTube and in this version of "North Country Blues" form the Newport Folk Fest (1963) you can see Doc Watson sitting right behind him! Doc's in the second shot at 0:53.

Sunday listening: Doc & Merle Watson - Live At Tipitina's. First time in a long time I listened through a record and then immediately flipped it back over and listened to it again. Some mighty fine pickin'!

Whoa! One of #DocWatson 's earliest Martin D-28's is available. Only $75K. Not bad for an authentic guitar owned and used by Doc. #BillyStrings should buy it.

Photo of Doc Watson’sMartin D-28 1946. Ralph Rinzler purchased this guitar in 1959 and gave it to Doc Watson and can be heard on the album "Doc Watson and Son.”

It’s a classic acoustic model with a warm brown finish that deepens toward the edges, creating a subtle sunburst effect. The body displays extensive distressing, including scratches, scuffs, and worn areas that expose lighter wood beneath the surface. There is a decorative rosette that encircles the soundhole, and a tortoiseshell-patterned pickguard. The bridge is black with white pins for the string holes.

The neck is made of dark wood and is marked with metal frets. The headstock is adorned with the "Martin & Co." logo in gold lettering, and silver tuning pegs. Despite the evident wear across the body, the hardware remains polished and well-preserved. The rich tones of the wood, combined with the distressed finish, give the guitar a visually compelling and storied appearance.

In the essential folk music book, "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down," there is a story about Cambridge MA folkies traveling and coming upon a Southern country fair. The musician playing at the time was Doc Watson. One of the Cambridge guys couldn't believe he had never heard of someone this talented. He asked where else does Watson play. The answer was, He doesn't play anywhere else ... he's blind. The Harvard Square folkies then helped put Doc on the road and in front of diverse, appreciative audiences. I heard him sing to an audience of over 3,000 at the University of Maine. He showed that he was well grounded in traditional material but was not at all afraid to perform the latest songs. Too bad Guitar Pilgrim hasn't released a video about Doc's picking style. He has done nearly everyone else. It seems to me I've seen a video of Tommy Emmanuel presenting how to play "Doc's Guitar." Doc and Merle were really amazing.

When I saw this title come up, Doc Watson doing “Nights in White Satin”, I was all “ha ha, yeah I’ll tag that one with genre ‘unusual’ and inflict it on my Mastodon pals!” But then I heard it and… ::sob:: it’s a heartbreaker, actually. That’s what he does to me tho, Doc. Breaks me. (He was also my intro to country music, pretty much! Saw him & Merle live when I was like 12 or 13yo, and was AGOG & mindblown.) #DocWatson youtube.com/watch?v=fis4fNl2ll

I love this album *Jean Ritchie and Doc Watson at Folk City* and there is a track called "Swing and Turn Jubilee" that I was curious about the origins of. Someone on this forum was curious before me and got a direct reply from Jean Richie herself (kytrad)! She goes on to give some super interesting background into the origins which is a Richie Family gamesong.
