It's fun opening boxes and finding things i've been wondering where the hell they were for 2 months after moving in to my new place in early December.
Just found my #Soviet Lel' PSR digital drum machine. Today's theme is... #DrumMachine apparently here. :)
This is one of several Soviet era #synths and drum machines / modules i imported from Russia decades ago.
The workflow kinda' sucks with it so i've sampled it and generally use an outboard sampler for production.
After the LM Drum and EDGE, next drum machine i'm adding to my studio is the Erica Synths LXR-02 for sure. Another amazing and relatively affordable drum machine.

I may or may not (Hint: I may) have an addiction to drum machines. I own many of them but don't own this one yet and i'm haunted by it. I awoke today thinking about it. It will pair perfectly with the others i own and definitely is one of the next instruments i add to my studio.

Today was a productive day.
I got and put together more storage cubby things so tomorrow i can finally unpack a ton of boxes still in closets after moving in to my new apt. almost 2 months ago now.
Am waiting for 2 large tables on wheels i'll use for the studio which arrive later in the week so for now some of the synths and drum machines live on top of them. The white rolling one is full of smaller instruments.

I have a huge geeky soft spot for the Roland TR-909. It was the drum machine du jour when I came of age -- perhaps most famously used on Madonna's "Vogue." But there's also a lot more pep and dynamic with this one that's surprisingly robust. Fascinating snares and toms, a generous low thump in the kick that accounted for midrange in the way previous sets did not. I may have to write and record a fun retro track with the TR-909 sometime.
I went for two classics: my Sequential Circuits Six-Trak, my EMU Drumulator, and two fairly recent machines: the Behringer RD9 (Roland TR-909 clone) & the Donner D1.
Picture is from my Korg KR-55 Pro which I didn't use, just to throw everybody off... The D1 is what I used for the breakbeat (it is a sample based drum machine).

Distortion (different kinds for the 78 and 808), delay, reverbs, flanger, etc were used. Patterns were programmed. I did a single hip hop inspired 2 bar pattern for the 808 which would evolve through live mixing and live tweaking of the voices on the TR-08, and further sculpted by the Boss MT-2 distortion as the track and BPM heats up.

I did multiple patterns for the 78, to emphasize the escalation through pattern complexity primarily (the voices cant be tweaked, only sculpted by outboard effects). The synths are used as a third party observer, trying to keep up but giving up before the end.

While yesterday's track didn't use any drums, this one adds a steady rhythm. For the drum machine, I'm using a Univox SR95 (aka Korg Keio Mini Pops 7). No sync and no BPM display on this antique drum machine, so all the clocks (MIDI delays etc) have to be set by hand.
