Small, iconic, and endangered, California least terns return every year to Alameda. In the early 1970s, the NAS Alameda base commander’s wife noticed and protected about 10 pairs of birds. In 2024, over 500 nests were recorded. Sharol Nelson-Embry tells their story with photos by Rick Lewis. alamedapost.com/features/natur

It hasn't been a particularly good year for poppies here in the Bay Area.

The tree's branches make an interesting angular shape, with the left side of the tree reaching up for the sky, and the right side of the tree reaching down for the groundMax (black lab with a light blue harness) running derpily towards the camera on a sparse patch of grass. To the right is an asphalt path and a canal coming off the bay, with gray choppy water. There are tall trees in the background and a blue sky with lots of clouds

Another beautiful hike at Sobrante Ridge Regional Preserve! This time I brought my husband (OG hiking buddy) along with our sweet pupper Max. We got to see the Alameda (or Pallid) Manzanita in bloom! 😃

Spending some time in nature with Max helped lift some of my sadness and dread about the LA fires, if only temporarily. Counting my blessings today, and thinking of all who are affected. Kennedy Grove Regional Park is beautiful!

This #EBRPD piece just landed in my inbox. I like Lynda - I think the kind of climate expertise she brings to the table is good. Her opponent is a better public speaker though, and seems to be much better connected politically, pulling in endorsements from the big name local politicians. One wonders how long Farmer would stay in the seat if elected.

At any rate, especially if 350 Action is endorsing her, I'm all for Lynda Deschambault.

I should make an endorsement on the #EBRPD race. They all seem like pretty good choices though, so it's hard.

Ward 4. Luana España is a better public speaker, seems nice, and I should see if she's getting all her money from anybody interesting. Main competitor imo is Susan Gonzales. (Who doesn't seem to be fundraising)

They both seem to be domain experts. Luana talks more about equity.

(Basing this on the #SanLeandro dem forum, which might be on video somewhere.)

School is back in session, but Alameda still has plenty of fun summertime events left to savor. Get outside this week for flavorful and fascinating festivities, or hunt for treasure at the famous Alameda Point Antiques Faire.

Quick ride this Sunday afternoon.

I've spent the last 3 days dealing with some pretty challenging issues. Sunday started off sunny in my part of the #EastBay but later in the day the clouds started rolling in. By about 4 p.m. the clouds were really rolling in and I knew that daylight would be fading soon so I grabbed the #eBike and headed for a short loop often I ride which goes through #DiabloFoothills park and #BorgesRanch.

I absolutely love the shades of #green we get this time of year in this part of California! It's a little hard to see in this photo, but the oak trees are getting new growth which has its own shade of green, distinct from the grass and the old oak leaves.
