Today and during the weekend we are at FIO 2026, the Extremadura birdfair, to promote the Greater Côa Valley and the rewilding areas. Time for meetings B2B with DMCs and tour operators, while vultures circle the landscape.

A recent upper respiratory infection put me down for more than a week. In the meantime, the weather has changed from cold 20F/-7C) to warm (60F/16C).

A male pileated woodpecker takes off from the feeder. He is a large woodpecker, with the black and white head and wings and a red crest and mustache. A male bluebird was sitting on the railing when he took off and is in the lower left corner. When you eat a lot of dried mealworms, you've got to wash it down with a drink(s) of water. 7 bluebirds are gathered on the birdbath, perched on the rim, just hanging out and drinking. When the weather was cold, there were a lot of bluebird at the morning feedings. My top estimate was 30. Here, a female takes off from the feeder, wings spread wide, while 5? bluebirds jockey for position on the feeder. As the weather got warmer, the number of birds coming for breakfast diminished. Here, one bluebird is in the feeder while one takes off, one lands and one looks on.

New bird alert! New bird alert!

My wife and I saw our first Canyon Towhee today! We went on a pleasant hike through cactus country, but is that where the bird was? No, it was at the nearby restaurant with the okay food but great window-side birding. Pickings were slim today other than the Canyon Towhee, but just before we left I did finally see a Pyrrhuloxia that my wire reported I'd missed at the start of the meal when I was off washing my hands.

A whole mess of Spoonbills, five years ago today

Six Roseate Spoonbills stand in a clearing of their roost area. They are large wading birds with an overall pink color, with dark pink-red patches on their wings. Their white necks lead up to a yellow-tinged head with red eyes. They have large, long, spoon-shaped bills.

Sparrow in the City

I don’t have to go all the way to Savannah, Georgia to find house sparrows (Passer domesticus); there are dozens around my home. But Savannah happens to be where I took this picture of a little female. The image came out crisp, and the rusted metal post she’s perched on gives the whole scene a striking contrast that really makes her pop. This was along the river walk, where someone had tossed a handful of corn kernels into a landscaped island tucked between the walkways.

If you enjoy photos of birds and other wildlife, take a look at my photo gallery. Sparrows are never overlooked—they're a valued and important part of my collection. Feel free to explore!

"A small bird stands on the edge of a weathered metal pipe, and the entire scene feels intimate—close enough that you can almost sense the tiny weight of the bird’s body. The house sparrow is captured mid‑moment, its beak slightly open as if it has just chirped or is about to. Its feathers form a tapestry of warm browns, soft tans, and dark streaks, each one sharply defined. The crown and back show deeper chestnut tones, while the chest and belly fade into a pale, lightly streaked buff.

The sparrow’s posture is alert but unhurried. Its head tilts slightly forward, giving the impression of curiosity or quiet attention. The metal perch beneath it is rusted and textured, the orange‑brown corrosion contrasting with the bird’s delicate plumage. Behind the sparrow, the world dissolves into a soft blur of cool blues and grays, creating a gentle backdrop that makes the bird stand out as the clear focal point. The shallow depth of field gives the sense that everything else has stepped back to let this tiny creature have the stage.

The overall feeling is one of stillness and presence—a small life paused in a single breath of daylight." - Microsoft Copilot

Happy Flicker Friday from one of my beloved interludes. 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a male northern flicker (Colaptes auratus) perched on top of the cut-off end of a vertically mounted log in bright sunny weather, facing to the right of frame with its head slightly cocked and tilted upward. It is a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray face and a long dark gray beak, red cheek patches, a red spot on the back of its head, a large black chevron across its chest, black barring across its back and wings, and black polka dots all over its belly. The background is blurred greenery.
