Great blue herons in bright light

There are two great blue herons in this photograph. One seems to be not very comfortably ensconced at the top of a cypress tree, its neck outstretched to the right, its head leaning forward. It is standing upright on one of the upper branches with its legs spread as if to keep it steady.

The other bird is just flying in from the right toward a branch below the bird in the tree, preparing to alight. The black feathers on the top of this bird's head, like those of the bird already in the tree, are curving upward and toward the birds' backs.

Because of the coloring of the birds and the deep green foliage of the tree, we can see that once these very striking birds have settled down, they will become camouflaged pretty handily.

The sky in the background is blue.

Finally went out to a real hotspot today. There was so much icy snow on the trail. I made an extra trek back to the car to ditch the scope & camera, then I didn't get very far. On the reservoir were about 2,000 Canada Geese, five Tundra Swan, a few odd ducks, a Horned Grebe, and 50 Canvasback (for which I had to write comments due to the large number???) #birding

Flight Past the Shark Shack

We were in Galveston, Texas a while back, and I found myself standing on a corner watching gulls swoop and glide through the sky. Naturally, I had my camera ready. I caught this laughing gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) soaring down the street, just about to cross through the intersection. As it passed overhead, it happened to fly right by a restaurant called The Shark Shack.

Jetzt also doch. Habe mich registriert für einen ADEBAR2-Quadranten, obwohl ich nicht richtig weiß, wie ich die zusätzlichen Kartierungen noch unterbringen soll.
Aber wir konnten ein paar Leute überzeugen mit zu machen - und wenn man diese riesigen Felder auf mehrere Schultern (bzw Ohren und Ferngläser) verteilt, wird es wohl klappen.

5007_3 heißt unser TK Viertel, oder wie wir es nennen "Stadtwaldviertel".

Dann wollen wir mal: umfassende Brutvogelkartierung und ein paar Verbreitungslücken schließen 💪
