#engram

When setting up my ZSA Voyager, I decided to go all in, and change the keyboard layout to engram. Curious who that is gonna pan out 😄 I did swap Y and V already, to be able to do one hand copy-paste

#AllaKatsnelson in @thetransmitter, on #SheenaJosselyn's work on #engrams.

I like #TheTransmitter for their accessible writing on #neuroscience. It's building bridges for interested people, without over-simplification.

»They seemed to be catching a glimpse of a real-time competitive mechanism in which the #neurons with the ramped up #CREB expression were primed to jump into an #engram. They had found what they were looking for.«

Spent some quality time with my Glove80 and Engram-based layout yesterday. I think this is, in fact, the end game. I’m still at 0 wpm on MonkeyType (having not used it or practiced for a couple of weeks), but it just feels really nice.

Figure 1: Animals learn to update a neutral context by forming a fearful memory while maintaining context discrimination. A. Behavioural schedule along the span of 10 days involving three separate contexts (A, B, C). Experimental group (Linked) was habituated to Context C and Context A, and then trained in Context B (contextual fear conditioning paradigm, black lightning symbol). Training paradigm involved 3 min exploration of context and the 1 min-spaced delivery of 3 foot-shocks. On day 7, during the Update of Context A, animals returned to A and immediately received a single foot-shock (immediate-shock paradigm, black and white lightning symbol), therefore updating their original engram for A and forming a fear association to A (A became A’). Presence of a fearful memory for the three contexts was tested on day 8 (A’), day 9 (C2) and day 10 (B2). Control group Not Linked I animals lack an existing engram for A to update, since they were not exposed to A prior to behavioural update and remained in their homecage (HC). Control group Not Linked II animals were not updated to A’ as foot-shock was not delivered during the corresponding session. B. Freezing behaviour as a readout for memory recall along the behavioural schedule.

Neuroscientists successfully test theory that forgetting is actually a form of learning medicalxpress.com/news/2023-08

Adaptive expression of engrams by retroactive interference cell.com/cell-reports/fulltext

Highlights
• Retroactive interference causes forgetting by the competition of two memory engrams
• Forgotten engrams can be expressed or updated by reexposure to training cues
• Artificial reactivation of engram cells rescues interference-induced forgetting
• Interference is an active process that requires the activation of the suppressed engram

these findings indicate that retroactive interference modules engram expression in a manner that is both reversible and updatable. Inference may constitute a form of adaptive forgetting where, in everyday life, new perceptual and environmental inputs modulate the natural forgetting process.

Had a little time this morning, and came up with the #Engram-based layout below.

Keys that have two symbols: the bottom symbol is the first tap, top one is the second. Modifiers and layer switches are oneshots, as usual. Comp is one-shot AltGr, short for Compose.

This gets me all the symbols I need on one layer, we'll see how annoying those tap-dances are. I've been using :/; and [/(/]/)as a tapdance for the past few years though, no problems there, so I have high hopes for the rest.

Been pondering and experimenting with some symbol stuff & #Engram.

Engram remaps some of the shifted symbols, and I don't want that. A key shifted on my layout should be the same as on QWERTY, because I want it all in firmware, and remapping shifted symbols there was fragile the last time I tried it.

Yet, I also want easy access to a bunch of symbols without shifting or layer changing. So I guess I will be tapdancing a few more to have enough space.

I think I am going to give #Engram a try. But gonna set up things first, so I can look at the layout. I had to revert back to Dvorak to type my toots at reasonable speed.

I was thinking... what if I abandoned my own layout for a bit, and tried out something that looks better than #Dvorak?

I have two contenders at the moment, #Halmak and #Engram. Neither is perfect, and I will do some modifications - I did so for Dvorak too after all, mostly on the number row.

For both Halmak and Engram, my changes would be similar. I'm pretty happy with how my symbols and numbers are laid out. What I'm looking for is alphas and punctuation.
