OFMD Craft Fair auction item 1029: Custom Book Binding, donated by PiratePam. There are 3 photos, each showing a book Pam has bound. The first is opened up to show an endpaper featuring botanical illustrations. The second photo shows a glossy book cover featuring a painting of water lilies, with the title of the fanfic “The Merry Strays of Lighthouse Sanctuary” by XOXOEmynn written on it. The third book is the fic “Fair Winds” by jfc_anna, with the writing and a silhouette of a pine tree in gold on a forest green front cover.

A handbound book of Our Flag Means Death sheet music. The cover is an OFMD Season 2 poster created by xenantis, showing Ed, some of his S2 crew and Zheng on the left, and Stede & his own crew on the right. They are separated by a white strip that runs diagonally across the poster like a rip in the paper.

Hozier Lyric Book

Trimmed the edges, sacrificed some blood to the bookbinding gods, sewed endbands, and printed the end papers and cover. So far it’s my most successful book trimmed using only a chisel.
Original typeset by me. It includes the newest song “Hymn to Virgil”.

I went all out on this one. It was a LOT of work: Hand painted end papers, original cover design, original typeset (made in MS Word), custom vintage advertisements, hand sewn endbands, and chisel-trimmed fore edge.

And when all was said and done, I found a glaring typo while flipping through the finished product. 😮‍💨

Oh well. It happens.

The book Ubik front cover has been opened to display the front end paper. The end paper is hand painted in bright and vibrant colors of yellow, green, blue, gold, copper, and red. The colors swirl like smoke, blending into each other.

The book is opened and turned to the table of contents page. The contents page is designed as a grid of squares, each labeled with the chapter number and the page range of those chapters. For example, chapter 8 ranges from page 122 to 141. Also within each square is a black circle with a white icon inside each. The icons show different objects, such as a toaster, a bra, a bank, a bowl of cereal, etc.

Looking at the top edge of the book, we can see a close up of the hand sewn endband that sits at the top of the book’s spine. The endband is sewn in shiny brown cotton thread.

A book block in an improvised book press: two long wooden boards, only about 7cm wide, clamped with spring clamps and supported on two stacks of books, with the book block dangling in midair. There is greaseproof paper lining the boards to prevent glue getting everywhere when I glue the book spine.

Re: LB, if any #fanbinding fen are taking commissions and can work from a poorly formatted word doc, hmu, I would love a real copy of Bottoming Out

I finished my first book-binding project! I'm so excited and proud!!! I know several things I'll do differently next time, but despite some wonkiness I think these books are beautiful.

The story bound within them is Suradanna and the Sea by the wonderful @rebeccafraimow which you can read at https://rebeccafraimow.com/2023/08/20/suradanna-and-the-sea/

It's a wonderful novella and I knew it had to be the first thing I bind. I made one folio edition and one quarto edition, because I wanted to try both sizes to see how they worked. I'm going to be sending one copy to the author and I will be keeping the other copy for myself.

@FandomChats I don't feel like I have a main fandom at the moment, although it would probably be reasonable to say it's still #MDZS, which has been my main fandom for the past five years. For some reason I am now typesetting my girlfriend's favourite 200k Weiss Kreuz fanfic from 2002. So I can case bind it for her as a gift.

my first #fanbinding project! :) I bound copies of the t4t panel zine for myself and fellow panelists and organizer! It's a very simple pamphlet binding, since a small zine like this wouldn't bear up to anything more complicated, but it is an excellent proof of concept that I can do this kind of thing, and I'm excited to try more
