Hi there! Very nice page to promote this symbol! To me, that would be a very good candidate to substitute the pentagon / pentacle. I totally agree that, being a character, it is more easily introduced in various texts and posts. However, typing it might be difficult in many platforms or OS's, so there might not be so much gain in this sense (there's always the copy-paste option, sure). It would be great that it could be used as a hashtag, but last time I checked, I couldn't (maybe it depends on my node's software?). Checking again... #⁂

Colored and/or rotated versions could be used where such content is possible, but the good thing is that it's such a specific character, that it is easily recognizable both rotated and not, and both with 5 or 6 pointed asterisks.

Now the funny thing is that there is no centralized body to which propose an official symbol or logo (and I love that it is this way). So... how to promote a change? That's probably a social challenge!

fyi the designer also made a new :butterfedyC: fediverse emoji :p :butterfedy1: :butterfedy2: :butterfedy3: , which would help to make fedi more mainstream friendly, but it looks like the original designer lost interest in fediverse and disappeared.... they were complaining about the large cdns. anyway....

....i only did the coloring, i think this :butterfedyC: could be invoked with :fediemoji: to leave the legacy :fediverse: :'fediverse': emoji intact for the foreseeable future??? btw @eichkat3r , I was searching the interwebs for fediverse emoji and found u, you may b into this and the above peertube post also. (maybe the peertube, line-style ones need a slightly thicker line to match these fedi emoji??)

Good morning (or TZAG) everyone!
As I said earlier, here's some more info (some of it may have been already posted in current or nearby threads):

Here's a bit of history on the unofficial-and-quite-adopted logo for the #Fediverse, plus some other ideas: https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/fediverse-logo-or-icon-proposal/1057, also contributed by @dsfgs.

To add a bit of more data to the history: the rotation of the pentacle has three objectives: firstly, so that it does not look neither like an upright pentacle, nor an inverted one, both of which are symbols of actual use. The other main objective was to make it square in proportions, so that if it is used in a place where it is displayed as a circle (such as many apps do in avatars: the original image is square, but it's displayed as a circle), it still appears centered and fully visible. Finally, being a bit rotated adds dynamism.

Here's a discussion (in Catalan, hopefully you can machine-translate it) where @titi, @marcelcosta and I discussed a new idea for a logo: the U+2042 ASTERISM character: ⁂ https://agora.fedi.cat/t/targeta-fediversal-amb-nou-logo/738 (plus a conversation in https://bcn.fedi.cat/notice/AbIbB3mNisOH7f3cIq with @paukokura too).

For the record, I also attach the Asterism idea. For my taste, it works better than the original pentacle, especially in small sizes (although it's still a bit cluttered, but I'd say it's clearly recognizable), and it adds the advantage of being an actual character (depending on the font, it may be implemented with 5 or 6 pointed asterisks, but I don't think that's a problem). The problem is that it is not a clear evolution of the first one, so an hypothetical process of adoption would probably generate confusion for some time. But the #Fediverse is confusing, also! Because... what is the Fediverse? In https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/c/fediversity/10 there are some discussions, and I also remember there being one somewhere (not sure if in this forum) about how to best communicate the idea of the Fediverse (including maybe a motto), to help improve the adoption.

Anyway, for me it is funny (and a bit flattering too) to see the original logo appearing here and there. It is also interesting to observe how this all happens without any verticality or hierarchy being applied (formally, at least). The logo, by the way, disappeared at some point in Wikipedia's English version of the Fediverse article, but it stays in some others (such as the Spanish version).

Fediverse icon goes from fediOrigami variant to butterFedy variant because with two lines forming antenna it now looks like a butterfly. It is resting on the 'r' in "fediverse".

For those interested, recently we produced a standard #PeertubeIcon set that works alongside a #fediverseIcon. Most people who have a #Peertube presence also have a #microblogging presence, so the red fedi icons currently at https://git.disroot.org/fediOrigami/fediOrigami will be removed and replaced with Peertube #iconography, both red and orange.

We discussed removing the three trianlge version and just focus all the attention on the simpler design but we've been snowed under.

It *will* get done.

First step to having people accept a new thing is to have a palatable icon for it that doesn't instantly repulse. It boggles us when people don't realise how repulsing the pentogram actually is.

We had complete forgotten that we made this.

If you ever want to use icons on your website, here is a more sensible fediverse icon set that people have been able to use.

Of the #PeertubeIcons, everyone prefers to replace YT with the icons on the left side of that image. It seems people like a seperation between 'video' fediverse and 'micro-blog' fedi, 'tootally' predictable, haha.

With people apparently leaving a particular CloudGlare'd instance, and with some moving to non-Masto instances #Friendica, #FireFish and #Akkoma, we thought we'd remind that a 100% usable Fediverse icon exists.

The best part is you'll never see it on #Wikipedia, because they are politically motivated, racist, block Tor, assumed we didnt have #graphicDesign skills to be the true author, and other goalpostShifts, to hold back fediverse.

A colourful sample of icons for fediverse. They are based on overlapping shapes that together form and 'F' for fediverse. Shapes include trianges and an infinity loop. Parts of a star can be seen in the icon too. The icons are against a rich, dark, undulating form, with the word FEDIVERSE in a clean, thin, modern, geometric typeface with rounded edges.
