For the #SciArtSeptember prompt: illuminated and a bonus mesopelagic #invertebrate for #InsertAnInvert2024 it’s my #linocut of the #bioluminescent firefly squid! The firefly squid (Watasenia scintillans), also called sparkling enope squid or hotaru-ika in Japan, live at depth (200 to 400 m) and are bioluminescent and emit blue light from photophores. 🧵1/

My linocut print shows the firefly squid against a white background on the left side of the square so you can see the whole animal and then its reflection is shown on the right against dark blue so you can see how its bioluminescence would appear underwater with fluorescent blue spots. On the left it’s a deep orange-pink squid with large gold and black eye. On the right you can see its body is covered with bright blue spots. The print is 8" x 8" (20.3 cm x 20.3 cm) on white Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

A few of my ocean creatures for #WorldOceanDay. We call this planet Earth but it is more than 70% ocean; the continents and islands are the exception not the rule on what is mainly an ocean planet. During this period, the firefly squid gather in the shallows while emitting light, transforming the coastline into a scene reminiscent of a starry sky ✨🌊

My Firefly Squid 🦑 linocut for #cephalopodWeek!

Finished my skateboard piece for the upcoming #allhandsondeck2023 show at Beyond the Pale brewery. Japanese Firefly Squid painted in bright acrylic, UV reactive neon paint, and fancy blue glow in the dark for the squid's bioluminescent spots.

These will be auctioned off for charity at the end of May, running until the closing event on June 4th.
