I'm not supposing that these stills I grabbed from the video will help much, but you never know🤞 #FreshwaterFish #FishSpecies #FishIdentification #FishID #Kent #England #UK

A blurry cropped photo of the shoal of small fish (6-8" at a guess) I spotted jumping out of the water of a freshwater stream this afternoon.A cropped close-up of one of the fish starting its jump.Another blurry screen-grab crop of the same fish re-entering the water.Another cropped close-up of another of the fish 🙂

Pinktail Triggerfish (Melichthys vidua) – This striking triggerfish is easily recognized by its deep greenish-black body, contrasting with its vibrant pink tail. Found in lagoons and outer reef slopes across the Indo-Pacific, it is a strong swimmer, often navigating currents with ease. Unlike some triggerfish species, it is relatively peaceful but still highly territorial. Pinktail Triggerfish feed on a varied diet of algae, small invertebrates, and plankton. Their powerful jaws and tough teeth allow them to crush hard-shelled prey like crabs and sea urchins. Their bold colors and active behavior make them a fascinating species to observe on the reef.

Species #004! A first species to be photographed at each location I've dove so far!

Fourspot Butterflyfish (Chaetodon quadrimaculatus) – This distinctive butterflyfish gets its name from the four small white spots—two on each side—near the base of its dorsal fin. Found on coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific, particularly around Micronesia and the central Pacific, it primarily feeds on coral polyps, making it a specialist feeder. Unlike some butterflyfish that roam in pairs, the Fourspot Butterflyfish is often seen alone or in small groups. Its reliance on live coral means it's sensitive to reef health and habitat changes, making it an indicator species for reef ecosystems.

Species #002! I hope you’ll follow along!

Indo-Pacific Sergeant (Abudefduf vaigiensis) – This bold and striking damselfish is a familiar sight in tropical reefs across the Indo-Pacific. Recognizable by its five black vertical bars on a silvery-white body with a yellowish tinge on the upper back, it closely resembles the Atlantic Sergeant Major (A. saxatilis). Often found in shallow lagoons and reef flats, these fish are highly territorial and known for their aggressive defense of nesting sites. They feed on algae, plankton, and small invertebrates, sometimes forming large, fast-moving schools. Their adaptability has even allowed them to spread to non-native regions, making them a fascinating species to observe!

These are fun fish, they’re active and NOT shy!

Species #001! Thanks, and I hope you’ll follow along!

Welcome to IDtheSea! I’ve been photographing marine life in and around the ocean for the past two years. About a year ago I got more serious with the hobby and started identifying and cataloging the subjects I found. Let’s learn a little more about this underwater world together and see just how many I can find! (Hint: It’s a lot!)

My posts will have a “badge” in the top left corner to designate the group the creature falls into, keepings things a bit more organized. I started with reference books, simplified, and added additional categories not covered.

This guide covers fish species.

Let me know your favorites!
