Современные форматы изображений или почему мы до сих пор на JPEG?
Формат JPEG появился в 1992 году и стал де-факто стандартом хранения фотографий в интернете. Спустя более 30 лет появляются всё более эффективные и продвинутые альтернативы: WebP, AVIF, JPEG XL и другие. Однако даже в 2025 году JPEG продолжает доминировать. Почему так происходит, несмотря на очевидные преимущества новых форматов? В этой статье мы проведем обзор форматов и разберёмся в причинах.

No sé con certeza si la comunidad del #SoftwareLibre y la del #CódigoAbierto son plenamente conscientes del FE-NO-ME-NAL momento por el que está pasando en lo que respecta a formatos/contenedores y códecs:
• En audio, tenemos al imbatible #FLAC y al todoterreno #Opus
• En video, tenemos al magnífico códec #AV1 y a los contenedores #MKV de #Matroska, y también a #WebM para transmisión en la web
• Y en imágenes, tenemos #FLIF y #WebP
¡Realmente no recuerdo semejante dominación de formatos libres!

JPEG XL превосходит все форматы по уровню сжатия и визуальному восприятию (DSSIM), источник Оригинальный формат JPEG разработан в далёком 1992 году и уже устарел. Вопрос в том, кто придёт ему на смену. Идеальной заменой казался JPEG XL , в сравнительных тестах он показывает превосходство над AVIF, WebP и другими форматами. Можно было бы сказать, что будущее за JPEG XL, если бы не один нюанс: в 2022 году корпорация Google почему-то удалила его поддержку из браузера Chrome. И не хочет возвращать обратно.

i'm kinda hyped about #jxl (#jpegXL). at first i didn't thought much of it, probably jet another marginal improvement to JPEG, that's probably riddled with patents, right? but it really isn't.
for one thing it's a successor of #FLIF, that cool lossless image codec, that i kinda though quietly died (perhaps some patent ruined it?).
but instead it was developed into FUIF and then merged with a google codec called Pik to be the successor to JPEG!

I really like #FLIF and don’t understand why it’s not considered more. Of course, it’s just a few researchers working on it instead of a giant corp pushing its agenda.

#FLIF is a #lossless image format.
FLIF uses the MANIAC compression algorithm to achieve compression rates competitive with some lossy image formats. FLIF uses interlacing which allows for an accurate low-scale preview to be made from the first portion of an image, meaning images can be progressively loaded and don't require thumbnails. FLIF also works well on all image types, including photos and art.
