When I went to check the trap this morning, I saw that I had caught something. I cover the trap with a towel, so I couldn’t see what it was. My first inkling was when I noticed a small pile of feces with berries in it on the top the stairs down to the woodshed.
I lifted the towel and there was my prize. A baby fox. A very young and small fox, at any rate. She was extremely pissed off and vocal about her situation. She kept barking at me. The sound she made was like a bark, growl, and snarl combined. I wish I’d recorded the sound, but I was only thinking about getting her out of there safely.
I moved the trap over to an open area, stood at the front end and carefully opened the door at the back end. She shot out of there like lightning and was gone in seconds. She was moving so fast that she was sending up clods of dirt in her wake.
Sadly, I suspect this fox could explain why I don’t sense the sixth kitten being around. Foxes love kitten snacks, just as grown foxes like eat cats. I’ll keep trapping for a few more days yet on the optimistic hope that the kitten may have survived. I’ll bet the fox won’t fall for the trap trick again, no matter how enticing it smells.
