CES 2025, day 2, part 3, Jan 8. Wrapping up the day (and taking a break from the series).

1. I'm not sure if he's waiting for a beer or just puzzled. It was close to the end of the day, so maybe both. 1/30 at f/4.

2. I went to a meeting in a hospitality suite at the Palazzo, which is essentially an annex to the Venetian. Finding the suite required walking through the casino. 1/30 at f/4.

3. The hospitality suite was very dark, and though I took photos, it was too dark to catch focus. (I did better than the people who took pictures of me, but I'd used a film camera with manual focus recently, and they had not.) However, the suite had a great view of the Sphere, and I had no problem setting focus at infinity. The interior reflections in the window are part of the ambiance. 1/30 at f/2.8.

4. And then it was time to go, along with everyone else. It gets dark early in Vegas in January, and it was chilly. People seemed happy to be done with the show for awhile. 1/30 at f/2.8.

2. This company sells a health product based on UV light.

3. Playing a stringless guitar. Not a voiceless singer.

4. If memory serves, this team was from a national earthquake research institution in Taiwan. They make tilt sensors (unlike stringless guitars, these might be useful in my day job). We had a fun talk.

Don't know the species -- planted as an ornamental 70 years ago, I'd guess. From the needles, it's a pine. Since reading John Muir's essays this winter, been thinking about his description of pines; guess he'd have a shrewd guess based on the angle of the branches, the needles, the bark (which was reddish and more deeply furrowed toward the base of the trunk).

I rotated the front standard to get the plane of focus aligned with the wall. It was cold, and I'd been out for an hour or so; slightly missed focus on the rightmost/frontmost boot. But overall as intended.

As you can see, verticals are skewed both on film and in real life. The camera is tilted slightly forward, but the post on the left is skewed so far counter clockwise that any rendering is going to be a compromise.

For what it's worth, I corrected some barrel distortion in post. The Rokkor lens is very sharp, but bends lines as you get off axis. Didn't need much perspective correction; but while I was there, I touched up verticals.

This shot was a problem for exposure. The day was hazy-bright, very contrasty, not ideal for direct positive film. I broke the rules and exposed somewhat for the shadows; as a result, the highlights are weak. Still, the Cunard Building presents itself...
