A House committee has approved the Pet and Livestock Protection Act, a bill that would remove gray wolves from the Endangered Species List and block federal protections. Supporters call it a win for ranchers, while critics warn it threatens wolf recovery and ecological balance.

Hey, Minnesota! The MAGA cult is at it again.

Trump’s bootlickers in our state want to gut our gray wolf population by stripping them of endangered species protections. The so-called “Pet and Livestock Protection Act” is just another excuse for reckless killing, all to appease hunters and corporate ag. Science? They don’t care. Conservation? Not their problem.

If your representative supports this, they need to hear from you. Loudly. Call, email, especially if your rep is one of those spineless Trump-worshipping idiots who puts politics over our environment.

Protect Minnesota’s wolves. Fight back.

A screenshot of an email or webpage displaying a message from Congressman Tom Emmer titled “Washington Update.” The letter discusses Minnesota’s natural resources and introduces the issue of gray wolves, framing them as a growing threat to wildlife, agriculture, and pet safety. Emmer claims that the state’s gray wolf population is underestimated and blames them for declining deer numbers. He supports the Pet and Livestock Protection Act, which seeks to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list and allow state and local governments to manage their populations. The letter concludes by arguing that Minnesotans can responsibly manage their lands and wildlife. Emmer’s signature is visible at the bottom.A screenshot of an online contact form on Congressman Tom Emmer’s website. The form includes fields for the sender’s email address, phone number, and a dropdown menu where “Environment” is selected as the issue of concern. In the message box, the sender has written a short but firm statement opposing the Pet and Livestock Protection Act and the removal of gray wolves from the endangered species list. The message states that if Emmer continues to support the bill, the sender will actively work to ensure that their friends and neighbors do not support him in the next election. The checkbox to subscribe to Emmer’s newsletter is visible but not checked.

New Montana wolf trapping regulations up for consideration

Gray wolf – John and Karen Hollingsworth, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission is looking at a number of adjustments to trapping regulations, including some that would affect wolves . . .

The Montana Fish and Wildlife Commission on Nov. 12 is set to consider a crowded agenda of proposed fishing and hunting regulations for the upcoming year, including approving a shortened wolf-trapping season and enacting rules surrounding the trapping of predators like coyotes, which are designed to avoid incidental captures of grizzly bears.

Gray wolf – John and Karen Hollingsworth, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service

Federal wildlife managers denied a petition to restore ESA protections to the gray wolf population in the northern Rockies . . .

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) on Friday denied a listing petition from an alliance of more than 70 conservation groups seeking to restore Endangered Species Act (ESA) protections to gray wolves in the northern Rocky Mountains. Although federal wildlife managers framed the decision as following “a path to support a long-term and durable approach to the conservation of gray wolves,” and pledged to adopt a first-of-its-kind National Recovery Plan, the conservation groups said they were considering a legal challenge.

Gray wolves are still listed under the ESA as endangered in 44 states, and are considered threatened in Minnesota; however, in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and portions of eastern Oregon and Washington, the wolves are managed under state jurisdiction, with their respective legislatures passing laws allowing wolf harvests, while setting quotas and regulations to manage the populations.

Although the FWS decision doesn’t change existing policy, it signals the latest turn in a decades-old debate over state and federal management of wolves in the West, as well as how to quantify the species’ recovery following their delisting in places like Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.

- Too many animals that are in serious danger need more robust #protections under the Endangered Species Act, including #GrayWolves, #manatees, western #MonarchButterflies and American #bumblebees.

Extinction is forever. Once we lose a species, there's no bringing it back. That's why it's so important that we protect these animals.

Thank you for standing with wildlife,

Thankfully, #Colorado was able to enter into a one-year agreement with #Oregon to obtain up to 10 #GrayWolves for reintroduction into the state, leading us to today.

To establish a sustainable wolf #population, Colorado aims to reintroduce 30 to 50 (collared) wolves over the next three to five years, focusing on wolves aged 1 to 5 years old.

The reintroduction faced strong opposition from various special interest groups,

163: The EU Review of Wolf Protection Status

https://open.spotify.com/episode/3TIXgTU3Rd1Lcn2moMsz0l

The human-wildlife conflict with wolves has been brewing on the ground in the EU for some time. On the one hand, it has been fueled by a remarkable recovery of wolves across the continent, and on the other, by politicians trying to hijack it for their political gains. In September 2023 the European Commission invited “local communities, scientists and all interested parties” to submit the latest data in order to review the conservation status of wolves and decide whether to downgrade the conservation status of the species. Predictably this has sparked a lot of debate with clear demarcation lines between factions.

To deal with this topic I decided to change the format of the podcast and in this episode, you will hear from not one but five experts in their fields. I felt the subject is so complex that to present it in the most comprehensive and objective way we need to hear all the relevant voices. By listening to this episode you will hear opinions on this topic from a wildlife biologist, Professor John Linnell, a goat breeder, Bruno Lecomte, a social scientist, Professor Erica von Essen, an environmentalist, the Head of EU Policy at BirdLife International, Ariel Brunner and, last but not least, the Secretary General of the European Federation for Hunting and Conservation, Dr David Scallan. Special thanks to hunting journalist and blogger Denis Plat for his help in ensuring that opinions from rural France were voiced. Cover photo courtesy of Alick Simmons.

While making this episode I recorded many hours of material and understandably not all of it made it into the episode. If you would be interested in listening to the individual interviews with the guests in this podcast, please click here.

The views and opinions expressed in this podcast are those of the individual participants and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of any organisation. The participants are expressing their personal opinions and perspectives.

GOOD NEWS!

#Oregon will officially supply #wolves for Colorado's #reintroduction project. #Colorado has officially entered into a one-year agreement with Oregon to obtain up to 10 #GrayWolves to reintroduce to the state. The agreement removes the final barrier for Colorado's reintroduction efforts, and releases are set to start before the end of the year.

Colorado plans to capture wolves in Oregon using helicopter crews and spotter planes in December.

#EnvironmentalAction supporters have sent tens of thousands of messages to the state government calling for protection for #Wyoming 's wolves.

But we can't count on Wyoming deciding to do the right thing alone. Right now, the wolves of the #NorthernRockies region -- including Wyoming's population -- are the only #GrayWolves in the U.S. that do not have #EndangeredSpeciesAct protections. That's why we're also working to convince the #Biden administration to restore federal protections.

@Jackiemauro The samples were run by CDFW’s Wildlife Forensics Laboratory. DNA analysis showed 1 adult female & 4 of her offspring, 2 males and 2 females. Through further analysis of the wolf pup’s DNA the connection to an adult male (which was not included in the samples ) was seen. They determined he is most likely from the Lassen pack. … So there’s 6 #GrayWolves, 2 adults and their 4 pups! ☺️

END THE WOLF HUNTS

#Idaho is doubling down on its goal of slaughtering most of the state's #wolves.

This spring, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission voted unanimously to approve a plan that calls for reducing the wolf population, from more than 1300 to as few as 500.1

If Idaho succeeds, it'll be a heartbreaking slaughter of #GrayWolves across the state.
