Esta obra de Guido Reni es un óleo sobre lienzo de 88 x 72 cm, actualmente conservado en el Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Representa a San José sosteniendo al Niño Jesús, quien juega con una manzana, símbolo del pecado original y la misión redentora de Cristo. La escena está impregnada de una profunda ternura y espiritualidad.

El estilo combina el claroscuro manierista con el naturalismo barroco. Las figuras están iluminadas por una luz diagonal que resalta los contrastes en los ropajes y las expresiones. Los colores vivos (púrpura, blanco y anaranjado) y el detallado tratamiento del rostro de San José reflejan influencias de los Carracci y José de Ribera.

Even a casual visitor to the National Gallery cannot help but be struck by this lovely picture, Guido Reni’s Adoration of the Shepherds, especially at this time of year.

Guido has been out of fashion for a very long time. He was a native of Bologna, which, incidentally, has a large collection of his works, and did most of his work in the Papal States and Rome itself, as well as in Naples. As you would expect, his work is mainly religious, with a few excursions into mythology. His religious work has been dismissed as the typical Counter-Reformation production at the service of the Church, lacking the true creative spark.
