Creating a Cool Room for Extreme Heat Events

"Given the reality of global climate change and the increasing likelihood of extreme heat events, designing and retrofitting homes for resistance to extreme heat and power outages should be considered in all climates. Extending the "hours of safety" that a home can provide when air-conditioning is not available can be life-saving. However, it is not necessary for an entire home to be resistant to extreme heat. Instead, the design or retrofit can concentrate on just one room. When full-home-scale measures with backup power are cost-prohibitive, impractical, or not appropriate for the climate, a cool room can be a cost-effective and sensible approach.

A cool room is a designated area in a home or dwelling that is designed to provide protection for occupants during extreme heat events..."

Last year at this time. Curious to see if #MountWashingtonObservatory breaks more heat records next week...

From 2024: The First #SevereHeat of the Year Sweeps Across the #Midwest and #Northeast

By Alexis George
Updated June 22, 2024

"New Englanders dragged fans and air conditioners out of their closets earlier this week as the first heat wave of the year gripped the Northeast. The hot and humid weather that arrived on Tuesday, June 18th, prompted officials to declare heat alerts as temperatures skyrocketed into the 90s across many locations. And the humidity only made it feel hotter, which caused the heat index to soar over 100 degrees in parts of the Northeast on Tuesday afternoon.

"We saw little relief from the hot temperatures on Wednesday as the heat wave continued. Temperatures across New England soared into the mid and upper 90s, with parts of the region posting higher temperatures than South Florida on Wednesday. #BostonMA set a record-high temperature of 98 degrees on Wednesday, which broke the previous record of 96 degrees. A new daily record high of 70 degrees was recorded at #MountWashingtonObservatory on Wednesday, which broke the previous record of 67 degrees that was originally recorded in 1995. The new record high temperature recorded at #MountWashington on Wednesday also fell a few degrees short of the highest temperature ever recorded in June and the all-time station high of 72 degrees. Here are some other records that were set on Wednesday:

- Millinocket, Maine, hit 97 degrees, a calendar-day record.
- Caribou, Maine, hit 96 degrees, matching its all-time high temperature. It also posted a heat index of 103, the highest on record.
- Bangor and Houlton in Maine tied calendar-day records of 95 degrees.
- Reading, Pennsylvania, tied a calendar-day record of 95 degrees.
- Syracuse, New York, tied a calendar-day record of 95 degrees.
- Poughkeepsie, New York, hit 94 degrees, a calendar-day record.
- Cleveland tied a calendar-day record of 92 degrees.
- Buffalo tied a calendar-day record of 90 degrees.
- Elkins, West Virginia, hit 90 degrees, a calendar-day record.
- DuBois, Pennsylvania, hit 80 degrees, a calendar-day record.

"The heat would not relent on Thursday, June 20th, as heat advisories and excessive heat watches remained in effect for parts of the Northeast. Temperatures were forecast to reach a scorching 99 degrees in #ConcordNH, and 95 degrees in Boston on Thursday. The excessive heat also caused some trains in the Northeast to operate at lower speeds on Thursday, as rail temperatures exceeded 135 degrees!

"Another daily record high temperature was recorded atop Mount Washington on June 20th, with the new daily record of 65 degrees breaking the previous record of 64 degrees, which was set in 2016 and equaled in 2020."

[...]

"The stubborn heat wave finally died down some by Friday, June 21st, as cooler air arrived behind the passing cold front. While this historic heat wave definitely made headlines in the Midwest and Northeast, on the flip side, a colder weather pattern dumped up to a foot of snow at some higher elevations in Montana and Idaho earlier this week, just days away from the summer solstice!"

AES repair time estimates leave some without power as heat wave moves into Indy

By Ryan Murphy
Updated June 20, 2025

"More than 14,000 Hoosiers are without power just ahead of a days-long heat wave, according to a outage maps from AES and Duke Energy.

"Powerful storms that came through central Indiana on June 18 knocked out electricity for more than 67,000 AES customers and 69,000 Duke Energy customers. Most, but not all, have since had their service restored.

"As of about 8:30 a.m. on June 20, Duke reported 4,235 customers without power throughout the state. AES had 10,279 without power.

" 'Due to the extent of the damage to our service territory, and based on our assessment, we anticipate most remaining customers to be restored by midday Sunday,' a statement from AES read in part.

"An extreme heat wave will be in its second day at that point, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service. Heat indices could spike into the triple digits on June 22 and June 23 as both the temperature and humidity levels climb to their highest levels so far this year.

" 'We know being without power in this heat is difficult ... our crews continue working around the clock to restore service,' an AES spokesperson said."

Health officials issue warnings as #UK bakes in the first #heatwave of 2025

By DANICA KIRKA, AP
June 20, 2025

LONDON (AP) — "British health officials are warning people across the country to take precautions when out in the sun as the U.K. bakes under its first heat wave of the year.

"Temperatures are expected to peak at 34 degrees Celsius (93 degrees Fahrenheit) in some parts of eastern England on Saturday following a week of unusually warm weather, according to the national weather agency the Met Office. That’s about 12 C (22 F) higher than normal for this time of year.

"The U.K. Health Security Agency has issued an amber heat health alert covering all of England because of increased health risks for people over 65 and those with heart and lung problems.

" 'Heat can result in serious health outcomes across the population, especially for older adults or those with pre-existing health conditions,' Dr. Agostinho Sousa, head of the UKHSA, said in a statement. 'It is therefore important to check on friends, family and neighbors who are more vulnerable and to take sensible precautions while enjoying the sun.'

"Saturday is expected to be the hottest day of the heat wave, with temperatures falling slightly on Sunday and dropping back into the more normal temperatures next week, the Met Office said. The heat alert is currently scheduled to remain in effect until Monday morning.

"Unusually, temperatures in London this week have been higher than in many parts of Western Europe. That’s because the high temperatures are not the result of hot air moving north from the Iberian Peninsula or North Africa as is often the case, the Met Office said. Instead, this weather system originated in air high over the Atlantic Ocean south of Greenland. As it approaches the U.K., it descends toward ground level, causing it to warm rapidly, Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lenhert said.

"That said, it has been plenty hot in Europe too. Aviation enthusiasts attending the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, north of Paris, this week sought the shade of a Boeing 777’s wing, cooling off as temperatures hovered in the low 30s C (mid-80s F.)

"Met Office scientists this week published research showing that #ClimateChange is increasing the likelihood of extreme high temperatures in the U.K. The chance of temperatures exceeding 40 C (104 F) is now more than 20 times higher than it was in the 1960s, the researchers said."

So, long story short, I had to go into debt to put a new roof over our barn last year. I used some of the leftover funds to replace a broken removable window facing west in the upstairs "attic" area of our house that had been boarded up for years. I just removed the new window (it's a single pane in a frame, and meant to be removed), and now we have cool air coming in from the west, which will cool the upstairs. Unfortunately, the old window fan that was like a jet engine died last year. Maybe I can have someone at a repair clinic take a look at it... The previous owners had mentioned how well the air flow worked on nights when the wind was coming from the mountains. They knew what they were talking about!

Breaking into a sitting still sweat as the house reaches 25C, nothing I can do about it.
Outside air temperature is 32C so heat just creeps in.

This cannot be shouted away or ignored by denialists , it simply is real.

Just like their brain dead shittiness is real.

#PlanetaryWaves linked to wild summer weather have tripled since 1950, study finds

By SETH BORENSTEIN
Updated 4:51 PM EDT, June 16, 2025
WASHINGTON (AP) — "#ClimateChange has tripled the frequency of atmospheric wave events linked to extreme summer weather in the last 75 years and that may explain why long-range computer forecasts keep underestimating the surge in killer #HeatWaves, #Droughts and #floods, a new study says.

"In the 1950s, Earth averaged about one extreme weather-inducing planetary wave event a summer, but now it is getting about three per summer, according to a study in Monday’s Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Planetary waves are connected to 2021’s deadly and unprecedented Pacific Northwest heat wave, the 2010 Russian heatwave and Pakistan flooding and the 2003 killer European heatwave, the study said.

" 'If you’re trying to visualize the planetary waves in the northern hemisphere, the easiest way to visualize them is on the weather map to look at the waviness in the jet stream as depicted on the weather map,' said study co-author Michael Mann, a University of Pennsylvania climate scientist.

"Planetary waves flow across Earth all the time, but sometimes they get amplified, becoming stronger, and the jet stream gets wavier with bigger hills and valleys, Mann said. It’s called quasi-resonant amplification or QRA."
