A Guide To Okinawa In Japan
2022-11-26

For #Caturday some #TravelPhotography ten years apart, both from Kokusaidori Street in Naha City, Okinawa, Japan, and both featuring a large Maneki-neko sculpture, the Japanese beckoning or lucky cat. The first photo was taken in 2008 on our honeymoon trip to Asia, and the second photo was taken on a return for our tenth wedding anniversary in 2018.

A huge Maneki-neko on the side of a building. Maneki-neko is the Japanese beckoning or lucky cat symbol; a white cat standing on its back legs with one paw raised, waving. This one is several metres high and on the flat surface of the upper part of a commercial property on a high street. Its ears are red, it is wearing a red collar with yellow circular bell, and what looks like a floral, patterned scarf. In its non-raised paw it is holding a yellow sheet with fan folds on it and Japanese writing in black. The building side almost looks corrugated and has some Japanese characters below the cat as well as the letter A, large and in red, to the left. Below the corrugated section of the building are some windows at street level, in shade from everything above, and there is a fern-like tree. It's a bright, sunny day with clear blue sky behind the cat's ears that extend above the building's roof.A view from street level looking up at the pointed roof of a commercial property partly obscured by palm trees and a street light with hemispherical lamp fitting. To the right of the triangular property is a sandstone, more rectangular building, a little higher, but obscured by more palm tree leaves. Dead centre, on the sloping roof of the main building, seeming to peer over the top is the huge head and beckoning paw of a Maneki-neko, the Japanese lucky cat with white face and red ears. The sky is cloudy with breaks of blue sky, but the general lighting indicates that most of the image is lit by hazy sunshine.
