California bay (Umbellularia californica) is the only remaining native member of the Laurel family in California. Around 40 million years ago, when the region had a warm, humid subtropical climate, relatives like avocado and cinnamon also grew across the state.

The local #laurels (Umbellularia californica) are blooming and today's #hike was really peaceful on this little-traveled trail. I was out 3 hours and only passed 3 people in the last quarter of the hike.
