#leapSecond

2025-01-26

Usually added at New Year’s to align atomic clocks with Earth’s irregular rotation, the leap second will be discontinued by 2035. This change eliminates disruptions to global systems like GPS and telecommunications, allowing for uninterrupted timekeeping.

Time Lords decree: The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (#IERS) announced on Thursday there will be no #leapsecond added to #2024.
#Earth's rotation slowed in recent decades, creating a need for 27 leap seconds introduced between 1972 and 2016. Our planet's spin has sped up a little since – which is why we've not had a leap second added for a few years.

Climate change has slowed Earth’s rotation — and could affect how we keep time

According to a recent paper, due to fluctuations in the rotation of Earth's core, Earth';s rotation is speeding up. The final minute of 2026 would only have 59 seconds in order to keep UTC synchronised with Earth's rotation.

But #ClimateChange has melted so much of the polar ice caps that the distribution of Earth's mass has changed. This has delayed the negative #LeapSecond by three years, to 2029.

gizmodo.com/leap-second-time-1 - #LeapSecond is coming to an end ... because too many #programmers assume a minute has 60 seconds ... and then code fails. What's the new solution? Good thing they have until 2035 to find it. Thanks linkedin.com/in/lauren-leffer-.

We haven't had a since 2016. This makes me sad.

Good news everyone! There's not going to be a leap second inserted in the UTC time scale at the end of December 2023.

(given the overall trend in the rotation of the Earth, this shouldn't be a surprise...)

@jaseg @Spacehuhn that being said I wholeheartedly disagree with @tomscott and #Google on #LeapSecond #smearing and I'm glad all the relevant authorities like #NIST, #NICT, #PTB, #ESA and #RIPENCC don't do that shit.

@carolynporco

PS. And considering that the IAU is the same body that invented the UTC leap seconds, I don't see why we should pay any attention to them at all.

The have actually decided to abolish the #LeapSecond from 2035.

Nice. #TIL

Good news everyone!

IERS Bulletin C Number 65 has just been published, and (as expected) NO #LeapSecond will be introduced at the end of June 2023.

A graph of the deviation between UT1 and UTC on seconds since sometime around 2005. A sawtooth pattern can be seen as 5 leap seconds have been inserted. Over more recent years the delta has remained more steady.

Pesky 'leap second' will be abolished by 2035

An international group of experts has voted to retire the leap second by 2035.

Thank Goodness. Losing that second periodically really messed my circadian rhythm
