Text: Earlier today, we received confirmation the Government is intending to gut Australia’s environmental protection laws next Tuesday, with the help of the Coalition. Their proposed changes come at the behest of the powerful salmon industry but will also ensure more coal and gas projects are approved in the future. But the real devil is in the details. An amendment intended to prohibit third-party civil society organisations from challenging government past approvals of projects is meant to exclude the Australia Institute and its supporters from doing our work. It comes after we triggered a review of destructive salmon farming in World Heritage-listed Macquarie Harbour under federal environmental protection law, angering the aquaculture industry.

Text: Now, these laws are being rewritten so powerful corporations can bypass scientific evidence, democratic due process, and the scrutiny of the public altogether. Prime Minister Albanese is still counting on the climate vote to win a majority at the next election, hoping this legislation will pass under the radar. We need to demonstrate that the public is watching and expects better. Together, we have a chance to shock the Government into backing down – or at least delaying these changes.
