The fundamental concern in a market-based democracy will always be about how to make the economy and social programs better support the not wealthy, while the wealthy have better access to convince politicians to support their interests and more resources to bias the media to their views.
Civics is mostly about trying to address this, forever. But a decentralized media more reliant on the general public for funding and allocating attention would greatly help.
How much are we feeding the conspiracy mindset by having a centralized, corporate media filled by only elite university graduates? For most, it feels like you must be born into a wealthy/connected family to become a dominant voice in the public conversation. Or be chosen by them, and thus probably have proven your willingness to push their agenda.

You should be able to accept that the MSM lies about WMDs in Iraq got people needlessly killed and Trump's lies about 2020 being stolen got Ashli Babbitt killed. The more that you've fought for speech rights to criticize Israel and been called antisemitic for doing so, the more likely you're a lefty who also understands that we can't just try to shut down conservatives who hold views we consider abhorrent.
It's not simple. People will really get their feelings hurt even when we are careful to try not to do so. Some things must be said to have important conversations. Such open spaces cannot be made fully "safe".
People trying to mislead for profit are "bad" but they will always exist. And they must. It is impossible to eliminate them and protect free speech.
Their actions only pose a problem for us to the degree they are given access to lots of our attention. We need to focus on getting our media distribution systems to better help us filter out bullshit from the public sphere, based on our collective choices. Not via tools from another entity that could be bought.

Again, I just want a network where every govt and journalistic outlet (at least) can afford to run a piece of social media infrastructure such that whatever they want to tell the public, can go viral without the approval of any middleman company. Just like when they post something on their website or send an email. Adding "democracy of reach" to the "freedom of speech" the web gave us.
The web gave us total "freedom of speech" in that anyone could now have a site with anything they wanted on it, made accessible to the whole world.
Decentralized social media promises "democracy of reach" in that everyone can be on one network where what gets attention is fully decided by what we all collectively decide to tell others about, without anyone having more say than anyone else.
An education based on #LiberalValues is supposed to do this. To teach the people how to keep themselves from being locked out. To prioritize civics and good journalism.
Everybody has interests and thoughts on how to make things better. The point of a democracy is we all get a pretty equal say and we find compromises and things get better for everybody. The problem with the rich isn't what they want, but that they have more power to influence society. So we get a society that better serves their interests than those of everybody else. Understand the value of markets but fight capitalism's concentration of wealth and how it turns money into power. #LiberalValues

The death of democracy comes down to something very basic. The powerful getting to avoid dealing with uncomfortable truths of importance to the public. This has always been a problem and to the degree it is allowed, the people become subjects not participants in governing. Judge them all first by this criteria, not whether you like their policies. #LiberalValues
An essential point. #MAGA and many of their sympathizers believe that Dems, the media and elites have violated American values, norms and laws regularly for a long time. They are wrong in regards to degree and how often, but it has happened. Alt media careers have been built on pushing this propaganda.
So what Trump is doing is seen less as beyond acceptable, and more as finally playing as dirty as the other side has been for a long time.
