Last night I used my new toy, a NanoVNA-H4, to make and tune a simple antenna for 920MHz #meshtastic . It was great fun! I put together an antenna that hits 1.35 SWR in free air at the target frequency in half an hour with some workshop junk.

I am very far from being a competent radio ham, but my antenna outperformed the one that came with my Heltec V3, so I'm happy. I got a packet out to my local #brisbane meshtastic network.

Just had an interesting conversation about combining #Meshtastic and #LoRaWAN, like one as a fallback to the other. Has anyone ever tried that?

Sprzęt do #Meshtastic to najczęściej po prostu sprzęt do #LoRaWAN. Więc jak wgrasz firmware do LoraWAN i postawisz sobie gateway to masz "profesjonalne, z gwarancją".

Sporo płytek np. od SeeedStudio, w tym te obsługujące złącza i czujniki Grove można uznać za "profesjonalne" również na Meshtastic. Albo komplety od LilyGo.

Natomiast charakter tej sieci chyba pozostanie amatorski, oprogramowanie szybko się rozwija, wprowadza się sporo zmian (teraz np. w Polsce - głównie w miastach - pomału następuje przejście z profilu radia LongFast na MediumFast, by zoptymalizować mesh pod więcej urządzeń kosztem odległości. To oznacza niekompatybilność pomiędzy węzłami które przeszły na nowy profil, a tymi które nie).

Ein spannender use case.

Aktuell suche ich solche Beispiele, für den bundesweiten digitaltag25, an dem wir vom #freifunkrheinsieg wieder einen Infostand haben werden. Da wollen wir neben den verschiedenen Möglichkeiten im #fediverse auch unser Bemühungen um #digitaleteilhabe und #bürgernetz werke presentieren. Neben einer vielzahl von #freifunk Installationen (knapp 1.000) betreiben wir aktuell auch sieben #lorawan Gateways, um auch hier allen Bürgern einen Teilhabe zu ermöglichen.

Well, packet brokerage on #LoRaWAN isn't trivial ... for me 30s per day/device of airtime is by far enough, so if you need more you might try LORIOT - they offer unlimited gateways and 30 devices per free account, although I think their footprint is by far smaller ...

Why do you have to pay connecting your gateway to TTN Community Network? I have connected 3 gateways, no payment ...

I'm not sure what to think about LoRAWAN except "expensive"...
If I run my own gateway, I can run my own Chirpstack server for it and run my own LoRA network on NetID 0 or 1. But if I wanted to contribute my gateway's coverage to the Things network, it seems like I'd need to spend $3000 + $8000 yearly to get a NetID allocation so my network can peer.
The other option is I pair my gateway to Things, but then I have to pay to use it ...
... So why peer at all? #lora #lorawan

I kinda want to get started with #LoRAWAN but I'm not liking the prices of the gateways... I want something I can fit indoors but connect to an outdoor antenna. Ideally with Power Over Ethernet so I don't need to dedicate a socket to it.

Lots of fun with #LPWAN 😋 but conversation on #Meshtastic seems to be pretty limited to ham level (cq, qsl, hello?, qth, ...)

Heute war " #Aachen zeigt Engagement" im Kurpark und #Freifunk war mit Infostand dabei.
Ich hatte #Meshtastic und #Meshcom sowie etwas #Amateurfunk Zeugs dabei.
Ein Mensch hat nur über #LoRa (Meshtastic) erfahren, dass es die Veranstaltung samt LoRa Vorführung gab und ist dafür vorbei gekommen. Ein Meshcom Node samt #LoRaWAN war in Reichweite und es kamen Nachrichten z.B. von wo schönes Wetter ist rein. Der #DMR Repeater in der Stadt sendetet auch vom schönen weit entfernten Wetter. 1/2
