been over five years since the last issue of Tabula Rosetta and clearly i've missed drawing horror comics

#wip #process #makingcomics

Two panels of lavishly detailed ink illustrations from this month's Clippings column. The topmost panel features a back-to-back portrait of the European mythical figures of Krampus and Frau Perchta, with them fading into each other in a fog of snow.

The caption reads,

"Most folks these days are aware of the legend of Krampus, the fuzzy, horned beast that often finds himself as the anti-Santa mascot in holiday horror flicks. But tragically under-portrayed is the figure which he evolved from; Frau Perchta, or, as Al Ridenour puts it, “the egg from which it all hatches”
Frau Perchta’s origins have her not as a curmudgenly child-scaring mnemonic device, but as a goddess. Some legends have her leading the Wild Hunt alongside fellow god Odin–who, it can be argued, was pretty damn
queer himself. Others have her as a psychopomp, ushering the dead into the afterlife they deserve."

Below that is a portrayal of the Icelandic folklore figure, Gryla, chewing through a human arm. The visible portion of the caption reads:

"Myth often finds itself repeated across geographical boundaries, and Iceland’s own variation on the “winter punisher” formula, Gryla, is no slouch either. As Terry Gunnel put it to Smithsonian Magazine, “She ate one of her husbands when she got bored with him. In some ways, she’s the first feminist in Iceland.”"

this month in Clippings: your favorite graphic journalist takes a holiday from the hard stories and draws you all some very trans Christmas monsters of myth and legend

. . . look, they can't *all* be super heavy, okay?

A Linux desktop running i3wm.

The top row shows a Waterfox browser window with an article from Smithsonian Magazine, titled "Why Iceland’s Christmas Witch Is Much Cooler (and Scarier) Than Krampus", on the left.

To the right on the top row, an instance of Evince (a document reader) is open, showing an excerpt from "The Krampus and the Old, Dark Christmas: Roots and Rebirth of the Folkloric Devil" by Al Ridenour.

Finally, on the bottom of the screen, a Ghostwriter (markdown editor) window is visible, with the text reading as follows:

"# A CLIPPINGS SCRAPBOOK: KRAMPUS, TRANSMASC ICON, AND OTHER QUEER YULE MYTHS AND MONSTERS

For all of the nonsense about tradition, religion, and you-dont-belong we all hear from our conservative relatives this time of year, historical Christmas traditions sure have a lot of genderqueer entities ready to feast on the bastards of this world. Here's some of them.

We've covered a lot of heavy topics this year in this column, from the unsung heroes of the AIDS epidemic, to the trans men written out of history, to cautionary tales of exlcusionist writings in trans history....and my dear friends, it is the Holiday and I need a damn break.

So, in the interest of giving myself some fun things to draw and giving all of my fellow goth kids some new blorbos to love on, this month we're diving into the very, very queer roots of the modern Christmas myth, and the history of the Christmas monsters of folklore. "

on the board / on the screen

working through some heavy duty text boxes on Iowa's civil rights history while watching Grimith and Lethalfeline stumble through one of my favorite games

#wip #makingcomics #comicart #process

The illustrator slowly pencils her way through a series of long text boxes, documenting Iowa's civil rights history and recent trans rights struggles. A very rough pencilling of Iowa's state capital building takes up most of the first panel, and the Iowa state flag and Progress pride flag take up the third. The bottom rows of panels have yet to have their borders inked in.

(The text of those panels can be read in the next image's alt text)A Linux desktop running i3wm, with calendar.vim's Clock feature and an smplayer window with a let's play of the game "Potionomics" in the right hand side of the screen. On the left is a script that reads as follows:

On April 3, 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court ruled in favor of the plaintifs in Varnum V. Brien, making Iowa one of the first states in the union to recognize same sex marriage.

(Art notes: A drawing of the Iowa state capitol building.)

One line from the Iowa Supreme Court Ruling, on page 15, stands out:

"Our responsibility, however, is to protect constitutional rights of
individuals from legislative enactments that have denied those rights, even
when the rights have not yet been broadly accepted, were at one time
unimagined, or challenge a deeply ingrained practice or law viewed to be
impervious to the passage of time."

Iowa has always had a strangely progressive position in politics in the Midwest; the state was the first to allow women to practice law, defended the rights of Black folk decades before Brown V. Board Of Education, and in 2007 added gender identity as a protected class under Iowa state law.

(A drawing of the Progress pride flag and trans pride flag hanging next to the Iowa state flag.)

However, during a spree of anti-trans bills and laws, Kim Reynolds and the Republican controlled house voted to revoke gender identity as a protected status, giving the state a new first: the first state to remove the civil rights of any group altogether.

(It kinda bums me that people don't actively engage against things that fuck their lives up... So this is _my_ try to shake something up.)

Picture of a part of a comic page. It is a work in progress. At the top there is a panel with a bottle with a cloth that has fire at its neck. Next to it is a panel with a narration bubble saying "it is really a very simple construct!" and bellow it is a drawing of a bottle of beer, an old rag and a plastic bottle, with lines pointing to them and having the words "bottle", "old rag" and "flammable liquid". Bellow them at the left is a panel showing the back of a man holding a molotov cocktail burning with heavy depiction of shadows and light. On top of his head is a narration bubble saying "...riots...". At its right is a draft with pencil of an armoured man throwing a molotov cocktail and the narration bubble at the top saying "even with terrorism!!". Bellow them are two more panels, still at the draft stage, with narration bubble "of rebellion..." and "...and of protes oppression, injust". The text and panels are cut off, due to the pic. The panels and drawings are inked with hatching.

The artist's drawing board, the surface and the corkracks above all covered in pages of comic art. A Jack Hamm reference book is pinned to the top of the drawing board next to a wireless keyboard, and a translucent ruler sits on top of one of the pages. A monitor hovers above the drawing board, with a scene from the visual novel A Summer's End: HK 1986 on the monitor. One of the characters is telling the other, "Coke? I have coke."
