The
#rennaissance Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa was the seat of the House of Braganza , which became the reigning house in
#portugal from 1640 to 1910. Construction of the
#manueline #palace began during the tenure of Duke Jaime of Braganza, between 1501 and 1502. The imposing
#marble #classical #mannerist facade began in 1583 consisting of two floors, one with
#tuscan capitals, the other with
#ionic capitals. Later, in 1610, construction began of the additional third floor. The palace was the birthplace of Catherine of Braganza, Queen Consort of England and her father John IV, King of Portugal (the first Braganza king).
