I highly recommend EveryPlate for a subscription meal kit.

It's the least expensive option out there ($5/meal), there are some really good meals, and you can try your first box for free with no commitment (use the link below), so you can cancel after the free box if you don't like it.

I've been using it for a couple years now and I've found it cheaper than the grocery store, with all ingredients fresh and premeasured, so you don't have things going bad in the fridge.

You still have to (or get to) do the cooking, though. I also use it for portion control, to help prevent overeating.

Holy tatami mats, cancelling Hello Fresh is a bloody GAUNTLET. I had to confirm I wanted to cancel like five times!

After the third time I assumed I was done. Luckily I kept skimming the page trying to understand what ended up being an add to give me a limp wristed promotion to try to keep me on.

Even now I'm paranoid I didn't get all the way through.

Had my first CookUnity meal. I followed the oven instructions.

I feel like cooking in the oven didn’t enhance it any more than reheating in the microwave. It just cost more electricity.

I plan to have a week where I double up on meals so I can compare directly. But until then, I’m going to nuke them.

Related to the CookUnity saga…they deliver their mealkits in a really nice insulated bag. Like something not designed to be disposed of nor recycled. It says on the side to return it.

But…how? No instructions included. Never saw a mention of this on the website nor the app.

So I researched. Apparently the whole return thing isn't even available in my area?

I'm going to leave it out next week and see what happens.

CookUnity is requiring me to do leg work for an apparent misdelivery. They sent me a picture of a porch I don't recognize.

So I'm supposed to, what, go creeping around people's houses?

It's definitely not the porch where my packages typically go when misdelivered (across the street neighbor). Yeah, that's happened a few times, despite clear number markings.

This first impression is getting worse and worse, lol.

They will contact their logistics to correct the delivery, apparently. They delivered it to the wrong place. No idea where. If they can't fix it they will refund me and give me back the discount used.

As of now I'm now looking for a plan B for dinner.

Decided to try CookUnity. Initial experience is not good. It’s marked delivered. Got a text that it was delivered. It’s nowhere to be found. There’s no evidence on my cameras that it arrived.

This is the first order.

I actually planned my meals for the week around this.

We’ll see if I get refunded. I’ll give them one more chance after that.

First things first, I can put weight on my left leg for short periods of time!

I vowed to make active changes to support movement and longevity if it subsided.

Baby steps. (Literally.) Once this heals fully, I need to seriously incorporate activity to support balance, flexibility and sturdiness.

Somewhat unrelated, we decided to try out another meal kit service. Reasoning:

The relentlessness (of meal planning)
We had a great trial (thanks Dan)
Learning new recipes, techniques and ideas

And after watching You Are What You Eat on Netflix, I’m really, really interested in more vegetarian (and vegan) meals.

First up was Barramundi with Chipotle-Lime Aioli. Verdict? Green Chef does a lot of prep unlike other meal kits (having the carrots diced was nice). Overall? Easy to pull together, tasted great. Was something different than usual. Would make again.

Will report back after we have a few more meals under the belt.

Update: The Kale & Bean Stuffed Peppers (vegan) was quite tasty — filling and flavorful, did not animal proteins and the cashew parmesan was super good. Downside? This meal had the highest calorie count of our selections.
