Support Statement from the Chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma

The Office of the Chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma stands in unwavering solidarity with the Miccosukee Tribe in the defense of their ancestral homelands within the Big Cypress region. These lands are not empty stretches of wilderness, nor are they merely backdrops to policy decisions— they are living, breathing homelands, deeply tied to the cultural, spiritual, and historical identity of Miccosukee and Florida Seminole people.

For generations, the landscape of Big Cypress has been a place of refuge, survival, and continuity for the Miccosukee and Seminole peoples. It has shielded their ancestors in times of forced removal and remains a stronghold of traditional life where their people hunt, fish, pray, and gather in accordance with natural law and spiritual balance. It is sacred ground that has witnessed centuries of resistance and resilience.I commend the courageous efforts of the Miccosukee leadership who, through tireless advocacy, have carried the voice of the people from the heart of Florida to the halls of Washington, D.C. Their journey reflects the collective responsibility we share as sovereign Tribal Nations-to protect indigenous homelands, indigenous rights, and for the existence of future generations.

The Chief of the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma joins the call in solidarity with the Miccosukee and Florida Seminole to reject any development-such as the proposed detention center-that threatens the cultural integrity, environmental stability, and sovereign rights of Indigenous nations. The proximity of this project to active villages, the Miccosukee Reserved Area, and vital water conservation lands underscores the recklessness of such proposals.

Indigenous lands are not vacant-they are vital. Indigenous rights are not negotiable they are inherent. We affirm the Miccosukee Tribe's stance and pledge my continued support in this critical fight to safeguard the Big Cypress and uphold the dignity, sovereignty, and survival of the Miccosukee and Florida Seminole people.

Respectfully,
Lewis J. Johnson
Chief
Seminole Nation of Oklahoma

The Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida is a federally recognized Native American tribe with a rich history in the Everglades region. They are one of three federally recognized Seminole entities in Florida, alongside the Seminole Tribe of Florida and the Seminole Nation of Oklahoma. Historically, they were part of the Creek Nation (Mvskoke) and migrated to Florida before becoming a distinct tribe.

#Composting program to provide #Everglades with soil for #CommunityGarden

by Martin Vassolo, March 12, 2025

"Your food scraps could be used to help support the Everglades through a new partnership between the village of #PinecrestFL and the #MiccosukeeTribe.

"Instead of dumping #FoodWaste into crowded #landfills, which produce #methane emissions, the #EvergladesEarthCycleProject will expand Pinecrest's residential composting program and deliver nutrient-rich soil to the #Miccosukee Tribe.

"Driving the news: The project, funded with a $400,000 federal grant and other contributions, calls for installing four new #CompostingBins in Pinecrest and three around #MiamiDade County District 7.

"The initial phase of the program will supply compost to the #SwampyMeadows #CommunityGarden, which grows vegetables just outside the Miccosukee Indian School.

"Another proposal that's been floated is adding new soil to the Everglades' tree islands, though that would need tribal approval, says the Rev. Houston R. Cypress of the #LoveTheEverglades Movement, a partner in the program.

"Cypress told reporters on an airboat ride through the Everglades last week that the tribe teaches 'the essence of being in harmony with nature is giving back to it.'

"'With the Everglades Earth Cycle Project, we're giving back clean and healthy soil; we're giving products that might eventually improve the water quality out here, but we're also giving directly back to local indigenous communities here,' he said.

"Pinecrest already has two free public composting bins, one at the Pinecrest Public Library and another between the Community Center and Pinecrest Gardens."

A prehistoric archaeological site in Miami appears to be a contemporary of Stonehenge and Brú na Bóinne. The area around the site is under threat by development plans that are being opposed by Indigenous leaders and archeologists.
