I like #MicroG a lot. It's the perfect compromise.

@pgcd if you run the standard ROM, you allow Google and your phone manufacturer to drop any code at any time they want without your consent, even outside of major upgrades.

I decided to never ever give another dime to Samsung after they forcibly installed the facebook spyware on my phone one night of 2016 (or 2017?), without the option to uninstall it. The next weekend, I had the phone wiped clean and #LineageOS installed on it.

The only real way out is to not run the google play services on your devices, which means using a ROM that supports #microG: #CalyxOS, #LineageOS or #Murena's e/os. This comes with losing a lot of features since Google has been close-sourcing more and more parts of Android, but worth it for my use case.

From a privacy-focused perspective, #MicroG clearly has the advantage. While Google #PlayServices even when sandboxed, are still designed to collect certain telemetry and diagnostics, MicroG deliberately avoids collecting or transmitting such data.

MicroG is intentionally designed to replicate only the essential APIs required for app compatibility. It excludes the broader telemetry and analytics components that are deeply embedded in the official Google Play Services.

After discussing with @GrapheneOS about sandboxed #PlayServices and #MicroG which one is more privacy friendly, they blocked me. 😂 Obviously they don't tolerate criticism. Cowards. #GrapheneOS #CalyxOS

On #LineageOS, with #MicroG, my payed nova instance cannot check the validity of its licence any longer, even if the pro companion app has been updated. Thus, the pro features habe been deactivated.

Lawnchair or trebuchet are by no means as powerful.

I need multiple virtual desktops with cyclic turnover, backup/restore and free widget scaling.

It is now a month since I switched from a normal #android phone to one running #calyxos. While I still use #microg it is not linked with a google account anymore. I use the Aurora Store and f-droid, are more conscious which apps I install. Generally, I use less apps and more direct links via browser.

And I must say: it is great. Less notifications, less stress, less fear priming an algorithm in a wrong way.

I do not miss much. Payment via NFC and information in google maps sometimes.

If you have a spare phone, you might want to try out a #MicroG-based OS like #CalyxOS. I can't guarantee that it'd work better, but it's a nice middle ground between no google services and "sandboxed" google services, because it's a FOSS re-implementation of the google services.

The other option would maybe be putting sandboxed google play and just the troublesome apps in a work profile, so you can turn that all off and on as you need it and contain the badness?

There once was a website where you could see if a smartphone app would run with MicroG or in general without play services.

If I ever am lucky enough to switch to a Fairphone with different OS fork, it would be nice if I could check beforehand if my banking TAN app would work on it.

But I can't seem to find the site anymore. 🤔

Jag har länge kört med #LineageOS tillsammans med #microg för att slippa google på min telefon. Det funkar kanon verkligen, och det är nästan aldrig att en app inte vill funka trots avsaknad av google play tjänster.

Nåt som jag däremot saknat länge är en bra text-till-tal-motor så att jag kan få text uppläst när jag exempelvis kör bil. Fram tills nu. #SherpaTTS. Vilken grej! Jag kan alltså få svensk text genererad till röst LOKALT PÅ MIN TELEFON, och det funkar till och med ganska bra!

Ich habe ne Menge Googlefreie Apps von F-Droid, möchte aber auf manches nicht verzichten, das auch mit #microg als Ersatz für Google den Dienst verweigert.

In Graphene habe ich ein vertrauliqhes Profil angelegt, um dort Google und die betreffenden Apps einzusperren.

Der große Rest läuft im googlefreien Standartprofil.

Soo, I guess my transition from #CalyxOS on #Moto G52 to #GrapheneOS on #Pixel 7 Pro is complete. 😮‍💨

I still miss how decluttered and clean @CalyxOS presented stuff. ✨ @GrapheneOS with that "sandboxed Play Services" really messes things up from the user's side. I don't want a #Google account, no burner, just none. So apps keep complaining that I'm not logged in or that I'm offline, because I restricted network access. Didn't have that hassle with #MicroG. Guess that's the price for extra safety!
