South African Government's Version 6 of Minimum Interoperability Standards signed in Feb 2018
The latest version has just been signed after many months of work. This version has not really brought in new standards themselves as the key difference from version 5 was to split the policy framework from the catalogue of standards.
This was of the utmost urgency for bureaucratic reasons in the catalogue of technical standards can now be updated more frequently and signed off more quickly at a departmental level (technical) vs the framework (policy) that gets signed off at a political level.
Essentially the signing of version 6 now means the next catalogue update can be signed off much quicker.
The standards are applicable for the development, purchase or sourcing of any application system used in the South African government, and they basically help to ensure that systems can communicate between each other and that data is stored and exchanged in formats that are future proof and based on international open standards.
