#modulex

Update on the #lego #modulex baseboard tiny-brick-hoarding project.

Lots of new bricks since l last shared this. Both the 1x1 alphabet (excluding the Danish fantasy letters) and numbers are complete thanks to an awesome person right here on Mastodon.

Near the bottom are a bunch of printed parts. I was sooo hoping these would be ugly but IRL they're surprisingly nice thus unfortunately that section now also requires completion.

I'm starting to feel sympathy for that hoarding dragon in LOTR.

Fun #LEGO fact: in 1963 LEGO released the M20 #architecture system, later called #Modulex.

It came with a little rake so in those moments of desperate need for inspiration the architect could rake their mini-brick zen garden, empty their mind and visualize their next mid-century-style block of pastel colored concrete.

Got some additional parts including two types of clear #Modulex and the elastic band used to graph sales and stuff in Proper Business settings. I just like the colors and shapes really.

Updated version.

See description in post.

Here's the one for the lower bracket. It has a 45 degree slope on both sides, tightly locking in the base board.

In my panel it's the one mounted vertically. It pulls the baseboard to the wall and locks in the two french cleats at the top

Designed and printed some wall brackets to mount the Modulex base board on the wall. Very satisfying :-)

If anyone wants the #stl file, or even a printed version, DM me.

I hear you asking "but why at nine in the evening Pepijn"?

Well. Firstly as absolutely no-one asked for this. And maybe also as during business hours I spend some time continuously improving the pile of #LEGO #Modulex bricks that arrived today...

A pagoda for your thoughts. Red and white brick towerLoooots of tiiiiiny bricks. Lovely 1x2 red ones that appear to be one (and from the 70s!). White 2x2/3/4 that have yellowed

It's really nice how well the Modulex colors align with the colors of our typical Danish 1960-1980s house.

The photos (with the plastic appearing a bit reflective) don't do justice to how it appears in real life.

Yellow bricks and a flowerFaded painted "swedish red" aligning with the salmony brick. Our chicken coop btw.

This Modulex color also well represents the brown bricks often used for window ledges etcBrighter red modulex and a window (alu-wood composite)"Lightish brown salmon" also vibes well with the reddish brown bricks often used for window ledges and interior details ("pizza arches")

Update: Today I got a #Modulex base plate and placed my red brick... I'm afraid this is the start of an obsessive hobby..

At least it takes less space than #LEGO :-)

Thanks for the inspiration @cazmockett!

Today’s update is for my two boards of . I received some bits I was missing from a friend who was at Bricktastic last month and have jiggled things around (mainly the printed pieces board) to find them a home.

Huge Modulex display board with columns of bricks in each colour, arranged horizontally by shape and size. There are many gaps - some because those bricks never existed, some because I have not found them yet. Letter tiles laid out on a smaller Modulex display board. There are several sizes of letters and numbers with the alphabet sets in various stages of completion.

My latest cube was a very quick build to make a warehouse for the quayside. It uses some unusual elements - there’s a whole wall built from (the chevron), while the big doors are made of 8 short pieces of old Monorail track - they have so much texture underneath that I wanted to show it off! There seems to be some sort of biohazard incident going on along another wall. The final side is relatively plain as it buts up against another cube.

A chevron wall built by integrating a Modulex wall within the System bricks Doorway made with some monorail track showing its fantastic underside textureBiohazard incident in progress. Nothing to see here! The rear wall with just some macaroni tiles for decoration.

Bricktastic is days away, of course I have time to build another cube for ! Still a WIP… but a wall made of ? What’s not to like?!

#TIL about #Lego spinoff #modulex and, as often happens for me with tech that ultimately didn't make it (e.g. Minidisc), I find myself deeply enarmored; It's not faux nostagia... a kind of kinship, maybe? A sound technology; Only to have the product ultimately die off *more* due to the fickle winds of hooman taste than flaw or shortcoming?

Gee, I'm waxing poetically today, aren't I? Maybe a #haiku then:

Bought some more ( ’s little sibling) and a bigger display board while I was in Denmark. Have now rearranged my collection of bricks and printed tiles for more prettiness.

Here's a family inventory of #bricks. It's as if it's some kind of system..

From small to big: #lego, #duplo, #quatro, #primo, #storage-brick-io

The first three stack nicely and can be held upside down.

Missing is a little red 2x4 #modulex 🧱

Supposedly these purple bricks were custom-made for a school in Germany? Anyone have any insights into what the symbols might mean in that context?
