Creating systems change in a fractured world
Next Week! June 4. We are convening our #multisolving community for some time of connection and contemplation. We'll have questions for community discussion and two practical tools for taking action, creating connection, and navigating uncertainty. Among other things right now we are seeing a massive divestment of funding from tried-and-true highly efficient #multisolving solutions.
Prepping the report for tomorrow's drop-in session and really loving how this is coming together.
"One Million Neighbours is a bottom-up vision for the future, built by 100 participants from 62 organizations in a series of roundtable discussions. We identified common priorities and built future scenarios based on the concept of #multisolving: finding solutions with co-benefits for multiple areas at the same time, while advancing equity."
Big inspo from @bethsawin on the multisolving framing!
New models for a sustainable future—
a cohousing project for 15 people on a farm in #Australia. 🏠👩🌾
Could projects like this help solve the housing and loneliness crisis and lower carbon footprints? #multisolving
"Multisolving: Creating Systems Change in a Fractured World" by @bethsawin should be printed with wider page margins for all my scribbles. Read it!

IMPORTANT: Investing in protected bike-lane infrastructure “multisolves” (or at least multisupports) many of our big urban challenges at the same time. It’s a great term — any smart urbanism is constantly #multisolving. Via WSDOT's Active Transportation division, HT @typewriteralley.bsky.social
"When one policy leads to beneficial adjustments in multiple stocks, that's multisolving."
I enjoyed this conversation with The Big Story, Canada's daily news podcast - we talked about #multisolving as a better way to address the climate crisis. https://link.chtbl.com/UYIyzPYC
What if well-intentioned environmentalists are doing something…wrong?
Dr. Elizabeth Sawin, founder of the Multisolving Institute, realized that when she talked about our sustainability crises, she was effectively “bumming people out.” So what had to change?
Register now for a discussion hosted by @postcarboninstitute on Sept. 26 as Dr. Sawin shares how to talk about the #polycrisis in an effective and inspiring way: https://www.resilience.org/stories/2024-08-27/live-event-why-wont-anyone-listen/

Tomorrow! On the surface all #multisolving projects are different. Below the surface, they have some fundamentals in common, and you can hone your skill at those fundamentals. Register: https://bit.ly/MultisolvingWayWebinar
Last but definitely not least: for those who are #multisolving - acting at intersections of equity, climate, health, biodiversity, water & more- well I hope you feel recognized & celebrated, and I hope this gives you kick ass new citation for your next grant proposal!
Oh, this is thought-provoking. "What if we replaced GDP with statistics about girls on bikes?" https://www.thenational.scot/politics/24132973.replaced-gdp-statistics-girls-bikes/?ref=li
Amanda Burgauer: "There's a lot of data in that one question about safety, equality of girls and boys, and physical activity. And so this is not what you get when you measure GDP. You wouldn't be looking at those qualities at all.... GDP would simply ask: How much did her bike cost."

Another reason for #multisolving - when you push one lever in a system but the rest of the system isn't connected to or ready for the change its less effective than when the whole system is wired up, with good communication, trusting relationships, and a whole systems view.
@Jennifer_Miller @uxmark I got to hear Peter Walker speak at an event in Seattle for Cascade Bicycle Club a while back (probably pre-COVID). Agreed it's a great read for people who don't know how much of a multi-solving tool bicycling is. Now I have to look for The Miracle Pill. The Walking Life by Antonia Malchik is also great on that topic, or 52 Reasons to Walk by Annabel Abs.
