#SouthCarolina #police announced Wednesday that they are treating the inquiry into the death of 19-year-old #StephenSmith as a #homicide investigation. The teen’s body was found in the middle of a rural road in 2015, about 15 miles away from the home of the now-infamous #Murdaugh family.
Smith’s death was initially ruled a #HitAndRun but police reopened the investigation into his death in 2021 while they were looking into the murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh.

We can understand why politicians distort facts and play to fear on #crime, but why does so much (not all) #journalism parrot and amplify this?
Better journalism would use the political attention as a motive to drill down, offer context and look for answers.
Beyond crime is the reality that ours is a violent culture. Consider our high numbers of #guns, #police killings, #truecrime obsession and the parade of cases like #Murdaugh which are about violence but are covered as entertainment.
The Trial might be over, but the lasting effects of the last nearly 2 years will only now be starting to come out for #Bustermurdaugh - regardless of how you feel about the verdict or #AlexMurdaugh you have to have sympathy and compassion for the living victim of the deaths and trauma, who now has to learn to live with the stigma of who is father is to him & reconcile that with the world view of who his father was portrayed as in court.
