@cazabon someone I know noticed today that "NotebookLM" (which I understand is linked to Gemini) has appeared on their Chromebook app bar, unrequested. How screwed are they?

Getting back to the #AI-generated #podcasts on scientific papers: A (very) small #SciComm study finds that Google #NotebookLM summarized the key findings of 10 papers in an understandable and engaging manner, though with some inaccuracies. Half of the papers' authors were suprised to find that the podcasts were AI-generated.

The researchers now want to investigate the use of AI-generated podcasts for ESC conference sessions...

Machine Readable by Steven Johnson https://adjacentpossible.substack.com/p/machine-readable #AI #NotebookLM (really good piece)

There's a general point worth making here, which is that in the Gold Rush research
example, all the key ideas that are being generated are either coming from me, or from the human-authored works that I have collected. NotebookLM is effectively functioning as a conduit between my knowledge/creativity and the knowledge stored in the source material: stress-testing speculative ideas I have, fact-checking, helping me see patterns in the material, reminding me of things that I read but have forgotten. It's an important point to make in part because there seems to be a growing concern about offloading the actual research/ reading phase to Al-generated summaries. I recently listened to a terrific discussion between Ezra Klein and Dave Perell (two people whose insights on Al-assisted writing and thinking I greatly admire) where Klein notes that he has found little value for Al in
his research workflow so far:

Copilotissa on nyt Googlen tekoälyn paras toiminto! 👉 youtu.be/E2s3hCxXUhU

Tällä videolla näytän, miten Microsoftin Copilotin uusi muistikirjaominaisuus toimii, ja sehän hieman samanlainen kun Googlen NotebookLM:lle. Näytän mm. muistikirjojen luomisen, aineistojen lisäämisen, promptaamisen sekä äänipodcastin rakentamisen omien dokumenttien pohjalta.
