The NT government said under the changes, 13 more offences "will now have a default position of proceeding to charge".
Those offences are:
Offences relating to riots
Violent act causing death
Recklessly endangering serious harm
Negligently causing serious harm
Hit-and-run
Dangerous driving during pursuit
Assault on workers
Driving, using or riding in motor vehicle, vessel or aircraft without consent
Assault on police
Assault with intent to steal
Robbery
Burglary
Making off without payment
Ongoing, and very worrying, trend in Australia.
Increasingly authorities and governments are dropping the requirements and qualifications needed for its enforcement staff to carry lethal weapons.
Shorter training in Victoria, decreasing literacy and numeracy levels in SA, and arming staff outside usual police ranks in the NT.
We have seen the current ‘highly trained’ police misuse their lethal powers. Dropping the standards even further isn’t going to provide better outcomes.
