'Sange' (散華) is a ritual offering of flowers. Early each morning at Hōnen-in 25 flowers (commonly camellia) are dedicated to a statue of Amida carved by Genshin (源信 942-1017).
The flowers represent the 25 bodhisattva who help Amida take the souls of the dead to paradise.

💔🙏AN AFFAIR TO REMEMBER👑🗡️

Banbukyō-ji (萬無教寺 aka Manmukyō-ji) sits on the Philosopher's Path beneath Zenki-san (善気山).

Thanks to its links to Hōnen, it is better known as Hōnen-in (法然院), and because of the many camellia that grow here it's nicknamed Tsubaki-no-dera (椿の寺).

Nishida Kitarō's (西田幾多郎 1870-1945) famous poem is immortalized in stone on the path. It is an angry retort to blind nationalism.

people are people,
and I will be myself.
regardless,
the path I follow
I will follow on…
人は人吾はわれ也とにかくに吾行く道を吾は行くなり

Towards the middle of April parts of the canal beside the Philosopher's Path (哲学の道) become a river of petals.
The phrases 'hana-no-ukibashi' (花の浮橋 'floating bridge of flowers') and 'hanaikada' (花筏 'flower raft') both describe water thick with petals.

In Buddhism the equinox is known as 'Higan' (彼岸).

Higan translates as 'Other Shore', a reference to the far shore of the 'Sanzu-no-kawa' (三途の川 'River of the 3 Crossings'). Similar to the River Styx in Greek Mythology, the dead would cross the river to reach the afterlife.

👣🗾SCATTERING EARTH🤏⛰️

For 25 years Kurita Kōichi (栗田宏一) has walked the length and breadth of Japan, gathering small samples of soil from each settlement (whether hamlet, village, town or city) he passes through.

At Hōnen-in (法然院) he made a dedication of his life's work.

'Ao-onigiri' (青おにぎり) is a stone's throw from the Philosopher's Path.
The small store was quite recently brought to the attention of a global audience thanks to the hit Netflix show "Waffles + Mochi!", which explores food from around the world.

👹🍚THE OGRE & THE ONIGIRI👏🍙

Strong gusts put paid to Nao-chan's plans for a soothing tea ceremony beneath the cherry trees along the Philosopher's Path (哲学の道), so she packed her traveling tea kit and headed instead to one of Kyōto's best onigiri eateries for lunch🙌

👣THE PHILOSOPHER'S BLOSSOMS🌸

The Path of Philosophy runs between Nanzen-ji and Ginkaku-ji.
It came to prominence after the philosophers and Kyōto University professors Nishida Kitarō (西田幾多郎 1870-1945) and Tanabe Hajime (田辺元 1885-1962) used the trail as an exercise route.

We had 3 full days in Kyoto - Day 1: . Day 2: . Now on the way to Day 3: Bamboo Forest. Once again in one of these magnificent trains that looks both like it was made last week, from the condition, and in 1970, from the style.

The woman having a snooze in the ... that people feel safe to sleep on public transport is endlessly endearing.

during the in , 2019.

The interior of a train, darkened against the outside glare. The cariage is styled in wood laminate, stainless steel edge framing, and dark green velour seating. To the right of directly opposite, a woman is asleep siting upright on the lengthwise bench seat, her chin resting towards her chest. Through the open doors in the centre of frame, glare from the overcast sky shows the platform, and a series of parallel train lines, with buildings in the distance.

Another of drains after leaving the . I just can't get over how much I love the constant sound of running water that I encountered in Japan. Everywhere you go, water, and the management of water abounds. It makes me realise that despite living in the subtropics, a metre above sea level in a river delta, running water isn't a feature of where I live.

A stone-lined drain, flowing with a torrent of water, being met by a smaller, perpendicular stone-lined drain, which runs behind an apartment complex. The smaller drain runs under the nature strip - a grassy verge, before it empties into the main channel.

Another of old drainage and water infrastructure. Of course this is the so it's not just any old infrastructure. The arm-length koi swimming along in it were a fun surprise, given it's not a wild river.

during the in , 2019.

A stone-lined, slope-sided canal, approximately two, to three metres wide, two metres deep, with approximately twenty centimetres of water flowing in the bottom. Moss and lichen grow between the lining stones. In the centre of frame is a rusted pipe, just above the water level. Small plants are growing in the detritus collected in the pipe’s end.

How about “Domestic Gormenghasts of the Kyoto Urban Fringe” as an exhibition title? This narrow, oatmeal-looking place is on such a narrow strip of land, and appears to have been forgotten by time. I wonder if the area around the is economically distressed, or just home to a lot of very old people.

Another western tourist in the , in sensible shoes, leggings, and with a camera.

during the in , 2019.

Looking down a narrow sloped, narrow street. A very thin, two story building, narrower than the street itself is to the left. It has grey, cement spackle rendered walls, and appears to be constructed out of years of unplanned, haphazard repairs, with pipes, conduit, and peeling paint. The sky is brooding and overcast. There is a woman i a bright red dress in the distance.

A small, white-panelled Japanese building, with pitched concave-slope roof, clad in convex bamboo-resembling tiles. The building is at the centre of frame, enclosed on all sides by lush, dark green trees and shrubs.
