#pijul

2025-05-14

Aaaaah, I've spend 2 hours today messing with git stuff :pain:

I wish #pijul was an actual option I could use here. I've never tried it but every time shit like this happens I which I could.

@meisterluk By any chances, did you tried #jj, and could what makes #pijul interested be re-used with jj?

From what I understood, #git doesn't have the required primitives to re-implement the specificities of pijul, and since jj is backend-compatible with git, I doubt that jj could re-use them, but I hope I'm wrong.

Pierre-Étienne Meunier and Florent Becker developed pijul [1], a modern version control system. I praised it in 2022 [2] and still use it for rust projects.

Tomorrow at Grazer Linuxtage #GLT25, I am going to present #pijul [3] in a 5-minute lightning talk and show which problem it solves (compared to git).

Did anyone try out using #pijul instead of git on a real projekt? (Not a big one, but let's say a few hundred commits and multiple people) I once tried to set it up for a pet project but couldn't configure remotes iirc.

The March issue is available now -- Issue 292: What Comes After Git? This month we look at the ambitious Pijul project and the effort to build a next-generation version management system based on patches rather than snapshots.

Minor sidebar, finally got around to resolving a conflict in the #pijul repo to get the functions shim deploying across the non-rust-compatible machines mostly properly.

On chonkier machines, this isn't a big deal, but on the raspi zeroW it takes the shell environment loading time from 3.663 seconds to 0.096s, and unblocks the cross-platform development of the functions shim.

#LibreOps

A screenshot of the functions shim build visualization interface. A bar graph for run times shows old failures at about fifteen seconds, previous successes at about three seconds, and a success from just today with less than a one second build time.

@mpldr @amy

Yeah, #Mercurial still shows some signs of life (comparing to #Bazaar, for example), but I wonder how really valuable this space is for your personal enlightenment. I would be more concerned with those emerging systems like #Jujutsu or #Pijul, which seem to be more relevant (and I have zero opinion on their technical merits, because I don’t know anything about them).

@lord @bortzmeyer
#Pijul m'avait fait rêver quand j'en avais entendu parler, ça semblait être le futur !
Eh bien, c'est toujours le cas, ravi de savoir que le projet vit encore.

New VC backend for Pijul. I can't host it on nest.pijul.com, so I pushed it to a git repository on srht. Not all VC functionality has been implemented yet. Suggestions and comments are welcome.

I was able to build pijul version 1.0.0-beta.9 using Guix.
You can find it in my channel —— git.sr.ht/~akagi/rrr

#Pijul represents files internally as a graph, but how does it actually work?

Should I continue with #Darcs
or write all the scripts required for `pijul rebase`? 🤔 #Pijul has so warts, & some are tolerable if inconvenient, but lacking rebase is maddening as unrecording loses the actual commit so to unrecord is to lose the history. Additionally having more than just “record” hooks can really help automate shit. The fact that diff works funny too is annoying.

But the big things I would get: the identity store, channels, ease of adding your own scripts, improved patching algo, performance (less important than you might think).

Darcs is still an underrated project, but it is sadly stagnating. Commits are happening, don’t get me wrong, but there are some more obvious features they could support (& being shackled to Haskell means libraries tend to exist, but then support stops due to just how that community works unfortunately).

I said I wasn’t gonna go back to Pijul, but recently learning that you *can* easily script by doing `pijul-*` means I could start getting around *some* of my irks.

I want to keep my IRL identity and my NSFW seperate for non "nation state" or non "entities who's software i run" advesaries.

Do you have any recommendations where i can create an alt to develop software?

Ideally the place should check my git that commit that they don't leak data about me or my machine if that doesn't exist resources how to use git with opsec in mind would be neat.

It doesn't have to be git based, #pijul , or some other vc would be fine too.

@danielsiepmann @mikestreety @flanger Regarding these promising solutions: Do you have #pijul in mind? pijul.org/ I like the project's idea and I am also watching #jj #jujutsu github.com/martinvonz/jj Another interesting project is #fossil fossil-scm.org/home/doc/trunk/ However, I haven't productively worked with any of them yet.

Soooo the gitbutler.com thing, aside from whining about it being all product-y:

The virtual branches are very much the right idea. Except I don't want them to be local-only!! I want to be able to maintain a long-term "patchset" (pushed to an online forge) as a "horizontal" list of (stacks of) independent changes!

I guess the dream might be: that kind of horizontal UI, with that notion of "enabling" and "disabling" changes, for #pijul and even #jujutsu?

Hi, have any of you tried #pijul (pijul.org/)? What do you think?
