I cannot tell you how delighted I am that this exists.

Small improvements that took way too long: Lightning's gunblade handle now has a foot and the screw and the grip cushion is closer to the form in the artwork.

Screws are actual screws that I shortened. Grip cushion is leather, rest of handle is wood / MDF and the round thing that I call the trigger is PLA with an aluminium insert that will later hold a screw.

Now not to make a mistake glueing those magnets for the bajillionthst time. Magnets are so satisfying to use but kind of a pain to assemble. Also, how on earth did I already use up half a kilo of contact cement?!

I found a solution for my gunblade locking problem!!! 🥳 The unpainted thingy will be smaller and transparent and go on the blade. The silver part where the screw goes through is what holds the blade, it will be locked in place by the transparent part - except when I loosen the nut enough so the spring extends, as visible on the photo. This finally solves the problem that I need to tighten the screw an ungodly amount to avoid slipping of the blade. (tl;dr: 🥳)

Two identical silver parts with a narrow head. A screw through the heads connect them. A spring is around the screw. There's also a wooden part that has a hole that's exactly the form of the head of one of the silver parts.

I'm scanning some parts of the gunblade to make construction in Inkscape easier and I think the effect of the scan plus the magic wand background removal is kinda cool.

I've looked back at the most recent photos of me as Lightning and I think I won't fix the issue with the gunblade I discovered yesterday. The gunblade's blade is composed of three big wooden parts glued together and I got the shape of the two identical outer ones (very) wrong. However, it looks amazing. Fixing it would be very difficult, risk breaking the entire thing and not teach me anything. I'll finish it instead and maybe make a v2 somewhen with much more changes. ..1/2

Thinking way too much whether galvanization is known and used in a universe that uses 18th/19th century-like weapons but also space-like flying vehicles. Anyways, galvanization is pretty old, so I'll explain the blueish blade of Lightning's gunblade with that. If you bend your mind enough it kinda makes sense to make the blade of a different steel than the other parts (or the other parts might not be steel at all). 😂

Since my motivation for woodworking is back, I'm working on the gunblade details. The long slot has angled edges while the two more round holes have some kind of decoration / protection ring. The entire blade is made of wood and all of these will be wood, too. My sand paper sticks (just sand paper glued to a piece of a broken yard stick) come in very handy here. A router bit might have done the job faster but I don't have a matching one.

🎨📽️: Oh, Vanity Fair, bless your hearts for passing off glorified prop-making as an "artistic journey." In an era where fake news is public enemy number one, it's comforting to know that at least Hollywood's forgeries are "legal." 😂 Unlike real art, these masterpieces end up in the trash—or worse, as mail for Picasso's ghost. 👻✉️

My very first EVA foam prop was a large Skarmory knife in 2018. After making many knives (that would end up in my weapons merchant costume) in 2023, I decided to retackle it.

I expected the experience of making five experimental knives would result in a flawless project, but there was still much to learn and mistakes made.

I have since learned not to hype myself up too much, which has served me well.

A smaller knife on top of a larger one on a table. Both have red blades with a handle that has three dark gray strips wrapped around. Extending from the handles is a neck and head that looks like Skarmory's silver head. The heads have a yellow gem in place of Skarmory's eye.A hand holding the smaller and newer Skarmory knife by its grip.An unpainted Skarmory knife. It's black and white EVA foam with patches of white caulking in areas that needed smoothing out.

Working on details on Lightning's gunblade. I wanted to make this one out of actual metal and as it turns out, brass is really easy to bend and form. I used my hands, a vise and a pair of universal pliers. I also heated the end where it makes the U form with a heat gun but I don't think that had any effect.

I stared at Faith's MagRope for like 20 min and was like... I can see the form before my eyes very clearly, but I have no idea how to create it. Then I remembered that Worbla exists and well, apparently another material is moving in. *heads off to make room on a shelve

Theatre prop creation is a blast. I made this tiny hammer as a visual gag that is planned for an aerial play I'm in. It is really fulfilling being able to read what is needed in group chat and respond "I'm on it. I'll have it for you tomorrow".

In my prop creation journey for this show I've learned some more skills in 3D modeling, 3D printing, LED control, manufacturing engineering, electrical for small projects, drawing, and using threaded inserts. I've also gained knowledge in different types of screws, drilling PLA, and different types of glue to use with 3D prints.

For this show I've made a necklace, a star lamp, and a tiny hammer.
