Missed our Statewide Meeting yesterday? Here's the recording!: youtu.be/teU5rZ4ON9c

We gave an overview of our history so far, where the movement in Illinois has been, and where it's heading. We also provided a number of action items that you can take right now to support RCV (all links are in the YouTube video description).

@paige @miki_lou 2/2 we had such a good turnout even though it was -35 outside. It says something about the passion for #electoralreform in YK. We were inspired to see how #alaskanative voters came out in force to save #OpenPrimaries and #RankedChoiceVoting last year. And we will be cheering for you as we dig in to our own fight for #ProportionalRepresentation with multi-member ridings in #canada. Looking forward to being neighbours in a better & fairer world!

@vegdc It's enabling legislation for #RankedChoiceVoting and #ApprovalVoting in counties (I believe that cities can already use RCV, since #TakomaPark uses RCV I think?). The bill has been reintroduced for like, years now, since at least 2021.

I like RCV but I think AV is better because I think it's easier to spoil an RCV ballot than an FPTP ballot, and it's harder to spoil an AV ballot. These bills are important in one party counties like #MoCo because we always have weird primary results.

Imagine #RankedChoiceVoting elections where people who would stay home under our current system because their candidate lost in the primary, now vote in the general and help their second choice win. Instead of elections leading to greater animosity, they build solidarity.

Imagine everybody had to drink Coke or Pepsi with dinner and which one was decided by a vote. Would you obsess about polling, the marketing campaigns of whichever one you liked more and try to tear down the other one on social media? Or try to change the system so there were more options?

"We analyzed some 2,000 ranked choice elections from the U.S., Australia and Scotland. We supplemented those real-world results with 60 million simulated elections.

The results were clear: Ranked choice voting performed much better across all the measures we tested, including spoiler, vote-splitting, strength of candidates and strategic voting."

Hear hear. But can we stop calling it “winner-take-all”? Part of the argument is that a candidate who doesn’t get a majority should not be understood to have won in any meaningful way. The article says it well: the “pick one” plurality voting system. Or “plurality-take-all” or “plurality-winner” system. Keep up the good work!

🗞 Evanston Roundtable: "[The City of Evanston] is preparing to join a refiled lawsuit aimed at compelling the Cook County Clerk's Office to actually implement [ranked choice voting]." The legally binding November 2022 referendum "passed decisively with over 82% support."

Ranked choice voting outperforms the winner-take-all system used to elect nearly every US politician

> Ranked choice voting largely avoids the pitfalls of plurality voting, giving voters the power to express their true candidate preferences rather than being strategic.

Why should parties use RCV in primaries? It drives party unity. Under the current system, the winning candidate could win with <50% of the vote when many candidates are running, which leaves many party members disappointed and unenthused with their presidential candidate. RCV requires the winner to have true majority support (>50%), so the winner is a true consensus choice that more voters in the party can actually be excited about.
