😆 Ah, the of text-based browsers! This writer's love letter to and is a trip down memory lane, where CSS is a four-letter word and *JavaScript* is a myth. 🚀 Spoiler: They don't matter, but hey, enjoy your pixelated, featureless web, grandpa! 🔍

The #UK Government's Department of #Transport website in 1997. 🖥️🌐🛣️🛤️

#RetroWeb #90sInternet #WebDesignHistory #InternetHistory #Year1997

A screenshot of the UK Department of Transport website as it appeared in 1997. The page features a minimalist, retro design with a light blue and white colour scheme. At the top left, a stylised logo depicting a road or runway sits beside the text "THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT". A narrow navigation column on the right-hand side lists various categories such as "Aviation", "Marine", "Rail", "Road Network", and "Road Safety". In the centre of the page, an instruction reads: "Click on an item on the right hand panel to access further information". The bottom of the screen displays five colourful icons for "What's New", "Search", "Press Releases", "Administration", and "Links".

Who remembers the #London #Transport website in 1996? 🚏🚌🚇⦵ 🖥️

"Best viewed in Netscape!" 😁

#RetroWeb #90sInternet #WebDesignHistory #InternetHistory #TfL

A screenshot of the London Transport homepage from around 1996. The page has a red left sidebar with the roundel logo and links for Home, What's new, Site map, Search, and Contacts. In the centre, there's a blue silhouette of London landmarks including St Paul's Cathedral, Tower Bridge, Big Ben, a red double-decker Routemaster bus, and a Tube train. The main heading reads 'Welcome to the London Transport home page' in red cursive font, followed by a request to fill out a feedback questionnaire. Below are links to sections like LT museum, FAQs, press centre, and charters & strategy, shown as blue dots on a line. At the bottom are MSN 'Pick of the Day' and Yell's Top 10 badges, plus a note that the site is designed to be viewed using Netscape 1.2 or above, with Netscape Now and Microsoft Internet Explorer logos.

Ah, "Project Gemini"—the hipster of the internet world, where interconnected text documents are the artisanal kombucha. 🍵✨ It's not about innovation; it's about crafting a digital nostalgia trip for those who are just too disrupted by the modern web. So grab your monocle and enjoy this lightweight retro web space that’s more "meh" than "wow." 🧐📜

Pika, Bear Blog, or Micro Blog as a neat platform for conversation and connecting? #indieweb #retroweb #SmallWeb #blogging Any thoughts or experiences?

I like to maintain a list of cool #smallweb #retroweb ##indieweb #smolweb services on a links page at my photo blog. Any suggestions of nice community oriented services you've come across?

I’m late (20 years late) to the Vernacular Web article by Olia Lialina: art.teleportacia.org/observati

And part two (18 years ago): contemporary-home-computing.or

And part three (Prof. Dr. Style), from 15 years ago: contemporary-home-computing.or

Better late than never. Remarkable to see these essays still intact, even if many of the hyperlinks are broken.

Fear of the personal

This sounds silly from someone having a personal blog, but I’m sometimes having a hard time writing personal things on my blog. How ironic, right? I think this fear stems from having written a mountain of incredibly cringey personal things in the first incarnations of my blog, having made very complicated social experiences in the past, and to some degree, from where I’m from.

I used to […]

One of my ongoing #RetroComputing projects is maintaining a vintage #RetroWeb / #GopherProtocol server based on OpenBSD 3.0.

Web (clear): geryon.n8fq.org
Web (modern SSL): geryon.n8fq.org
Web (vintage SSL): geryon.n8fq.org:30443
Gopher: gopher://geryon.n8fq.org

A blue stripe below the toolbar and a gold key icon in the lower-left corner indicate that SSL encryption is active.WSGopher 1.2 for Windows 3.1 displaying the home directory and intro article from my Gopher server. I decided to rename my #RetroWeb / #GopherProtocol server from lucifer.n8fq.org to geryon.n8fq.org, in keeping with my emerging theme of naming computers after Nethack characters.

I learned last night that @ross has a #Tildeverse website. Today I added a Friends section tilde.club/~artlung/ (I added @gregorlove.com and @vanderwal too) #IndieWeb #retroweb

It's all very nostalgic indeed. I really miss how open and joyful was the early internet overall, especially after DSL adoption.

Wow. This site about color theory hasn't updated its design since the 90s. It even still has the original ad banners. #retro #90s #webdesign #retroweb

The funniest instance of Wikipedia vandalism was on Sep 27, 2008, when someone edited a core template included numerous times on virtually every page on the site to include a happy birthday message to Avril Lavigne.

The message was added to the top of every single page on the site, overlapping a couple dozen times (hence why it looks a bit darker than the surrounding text).

The Wikipedia page for the Dec 2001 riots in Argentina, with the text "The Wikipedia Community would like to wish Avril Lavigne a happy birthday!" crammed above the title due to vandalism. The text is dark due to overlapping a couple dozen times.

Fun fact, Nintendo keeps basically all of its old sites online even to this day, including even Flash content. Here's some screenshots I took just now on live sites, circa 2005/2006. Links in reply.

• Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland
• Pokémon Trozei
• Animal Crossing: Wild World
• Game Boy Advance

Who remembers PokéCheck? Community run alternative to GTS (Global Trade Server), used for trading competitive and rare (event) Pokémon with built in legality and hack checks. Sadly it died off with Gen 6 because it couldn't be made to be compatible. Today you have to dig a little to find what little information about it remains. (Source in reply.)
