On #ThisDayInHistory in 1960, #RubyBridges transferred to an all-white school and had to be escorted by Federal Marshals throughout the school year due to violent #conservative/#neofascist #segregationist/#KKK fuckwits who threatened to murder her for learning to read and count.

Did some research into this. Turns out the theme of this fashion walk was Black Historical Excellence. Several legends were featured, including #RubyBridges, the child at the center of desegregation movement, was also featured. Please note. Ruby Bridges is 71 years old; 7 years younger than MY OWN MOTHER. It wasn’t long ago. It’s actually still happening.

Ruby, I was about 12 or 13, attending a segregated school in Tennessee. I was a "service brat" having lived most of my life on Marine bases in Ca, oblivious to what jim crow was. The pictures of you with USMarshall escort, people screaming and spitting at you was a huge awakening for me. Please know that your bravery impacted at least this one life for the better. Happy birthday, ma'am!

Actually, it wasn't the "protesters" who were being defended... per se. It was black students like little #RubyBridges who needed protection from both "protesters" AND the government (that was baring their entry.)

On a beautiful morning, a huge crowd of Acacia Magnet School students and parents turned out for the Ruby Bridges Walk in honor of Black History Month.

When she was 6 years old in 1960, Ruby Bridges’ parents volunteered to have her be the first African-American student to attend a segregated public school in New Orleans.

Despite threats so serious that she required the protection of US marshals, Ruby calmly walked past the haters all year to get an education, setting an example for generations to follow. (1/2)
