A huge thing I've been appreciating about AEW as of late is the sapphic energy between "Timeless" Toni Storm and Mariah May. It's been a huge moment of fresh air whenever the get screen time, and the more it goes on, the tension gets even stronger. "Forbidden Door" (AEW's crossover show with Japanese wrestling promotions NJPW and Stardom) last Sunday was where it was at it's peak with Storm's match against Mina Shirakawa from Stardom, started as this kind of implied love triangle thing over Mariah and then concluded with Storm retaining her title, and then ended in the ring with the three of them making peace with each other and sharing a three way kiss inside of the ring. Not a turn you see very often, but I'm glad it exists. Great note to end Pride month on!

I think if anyone ever had reservations about getting into wrestling cause of the stigma that wrestling is full of queer/transphobic male fans, I'd point them to here just because over the course of it's five year existence, by the standards of the accessibile wrestling shows, AEW has already had more moments of positive rep for our community than WWE does (despite the fact that the latter company has seen mass improvement throughout the first six month of the year). Indies has a plethora of queer rep I could point to as well, but that's a whole other conversation.

This week, I’m spotlighting examples of sapphic romance in animation!

*Heavy Spoilers below!*

While some of these shows were (in my opinion) way too short, they celebrate queer love, queer struggle, and ultimately, demonstrate queer joy! I only wish we got more seasons of each. 😊

Screenshot from Nickelodeon’s “The Legend of Korra”, the follow up to “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series set 70 years after the events of the original show. With earth, water, and fire under her belt, Korra (pictured right) must master the art of airbending. Korea’s quest leads her to Republic City, where she meets and makes many friends, one of which being businesswoman, industrialist, engineer, and the only child of the former wealthy industrialist Hiroshi Sato, Asami Sato (pictured left). This screenshot is taken from the final moments of the series where we see their slow burn friends-to-lovers relationship turn canon! Asami, a woman with light skin and black long hair holds Korra’s (a woman with tan skin and a brown bob) hand and they stare into each others eyes as they begin their vacation together into the spirit world. Asami is dressed in black and Korra in her traditional blue garb from the water tribe. The background is yellowed, soft light and their bodies glow as a result of this light emanating from the portal to the spirit realm.Screenshot from “Harley Quinn”, HBO’s adult animated black comedy superhero television series that follows the adventures (more misadventures, to be honest) of Harley Quinn and her best friend and eventual lover, Poison Ivy. Harley (left) and Poison Ivy (right) are pictured kissing, with Harley’s right arm raised over Ivy’s left shoulder in an embrace. Harley Quinn is a white woman with blonde hair in ponytails (the ends of her right ponytail are dyed pink, the ends of her left blue), and is wearing a black and red tank top and black choker necklace. Ivy, is a meta-human with green skin and long red hair she wears down during this scene. She’s pictured in a dark green jumper. The background is filled with varying shades of purples, blues, and pinks.Screenshot from Disney’s “The Owl House”, a series that follows self-assured teenager Luz, who stumbles on a portal to a magical realm where she befriends a rebellious witch named Eda and a tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities herself, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda’s apprentice. Luz (right) and Amity (left) are pictured in an embrace mid-dance in front of a moon and starry sky background. Luz is a Hispanic teenager with brown skin and dark, short hair, wearing a dark blazer and pink skirt. Amity, is a teenage witch with white skin, and teal-colored short hair she wears in a half-up, half-down manner, and a dress with pinks and blues. The Owl House has become particularly notable for its queer representation compared to other similar, Disney media. While the series was unfortunately cut short in its third season, the penultimate episode of the second season featured the first same-sex kiss in a Disney show between two of the main characters, Luz and Amity.Screenshot from Netflix’s “She-Ra and the Princesses of Power.” Has there ever been a gayer, more inclusive cartoon than this series? Can’t say for sure, but I feel like this one takes the cake! This series is actually a reboot of the 1980s original, but is a whole lot gayer (I seriously cannot exaggerate this enough). A magic sword transforms an orphan girl into warrior She-Ra, who unites a rebellion to fight against evil. She-Ra features a complex relationship between Adora (our transformative heroine) and her childhood best friend-turned-archenemy-turned-lover Catra. I’m also a huge fan of this series because it was created by trans artist ND Stevenson - and it shows! Adora and Catra share one of the most epic love stories set to screen and they’re surrounded by a literal rainbow of compelling, unapologetically queer characters. Catra is a woman with cat-like features including a tail, large furry ears, and claws, and short brown hair. Adora is a white woman with blonde hair pulled back in a high ponytail. In the screenshot, Catra (left) holds Adora’s (right) head in her hands and admires her in a loving embrace while Adora’s eyes are closed.
