Steep mountains - that dominate #FaroeIslands landscape - are of #volcanic origin. Dark layers of #basalt alternate with the softer layers of reddish #tuff - stone made up of volcanic ashes.
These steep mountainsides are called #hamar (rocky wall). At the base a collection of broken rock fragments - called #scree - can quite often be found.

Drawing digitally has it's practical and logistical perks, and I like the freedom it offers me in many regards, but lately I noticed how I miss working with my polychromos. Not having to worry if I break an expensive graphic tablet if I apply too much pressure is quite nice. :blobfoxsmirk:

This week I am in Iceland. This the Kambhorn (650m) on the Stokksnes peninsular in the SE. There's apparently a path down the scree from the ridge to the beach but it looks rather steep!
Some methods to determine the number of components or clusters in PCA or k-means clustering: https://thomasgladwin.substack.com/p/finding-the-true-number-of-components/. These at least work in the limit of ideal simulated data.
The basic rationale is to use random split-half data to identify what's "true" versus sampling error. Scores are based on similarities between eigenvectors or cluster centres, rather than, e.g., the shape of the eigenvalue plot.
