Hand sample and thin section of a pillow rind and interior from Palaeogene lavas of eastern Baffin island. The solidifying melt continued to exsolve gas bubbles, trapped in the pillow interior by the rind.

Die Gole dell'Alcantara sind ein kurzer, stark eingeengter Abschnitt des Fiume Alcantara, in dem der Fluss über Lavagestein rauscht und auch im Sommer kaum wärmer wird. In der Hochsaison füllen Badende jeden Meter dieses schmalen Flussbetts, der Trubel passt dann wohl zum tosenden Wasser. An diesem stillen Novembermorgen jedoch stehe ich hier ganz allein, spüre die gespenstische Leere und lasse den Ort auf mich wirken. Im Winter verzichte ich freilich darauf, durch den Fluss zu waten oder zwischen den Felsen zu klettern.
