Sontinuity: The Tree and the Web

The scientific study of sound explains how Sephardic Jews have been able to transmit tradition and culture over time despite a history of traumatic rupture.

JIMENA
Jews Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa

In a powerful contribution to JIMENA’s Distinctions Journal, scholar and vocalist Vanessa Paloma Elbaz, PhD explores the deep role of sound in preserving Sephardic identity across generations.

"In her essay, “Sontinuity: The Tree and the Web,” Elbaz introduces a compelling framework for understanding Sephardic cultural transmission. The Tree symbolizes structured traditions passed through synagogues, family, and formal ritual. The Web represents the organic, sensory ways culture flows — through lullabies, songs, and oral storytelling, often shared in intimate, domestic spaces...

Dr. Elbaz is a researcher on the UKRI project Ottoman Auralities, a senior research associate at Peterhouse, University of Cambridge, and founder of the KHOYA Jewish Morocco Sound Archive. Her forthcoming monograph, Sontinuities: Cycles of Sound in Jewish Northern Morocco, will be published with Brill."

Distinctions is the online journal of JIMENA that elevates the voices and talents of Sephardi and Mizrahi scholars, researchers, artists and activists. Our content challenges traditional narratives about Jewish people and communities, and addresses contemporary Jewish concerns through a classical Sephardi and Mizrahi lens. Our mission is to spread knowledge so that everyone can better appreciate these important distinctions, while providing a vehicle that treats Sephardi and Mizrahi people with distinction.

"For seven months during WWII, the 100,000-member Jewish community of Tunisia came under direct Nazi  rule. They had already been subject to anti-Jewish Vichy laws. Now they were exposed to the whims of German SS Officers led by Einsatzgruppen commander Walter Rauff. Did Germany have a policy to annihilate all the Jews of North Africa? Although thwarted by the Allied invasion, what first practical steps were taken to implement the systematic extermination of the Jews of Tunisia?

Shaul Bartal has been gathering evidence based on interviews with survivors, contemporary songs by Tunisian Jews as well as other studies, some based on Tunisian archival sources. He is Research Associate at the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, Bar–Ilan University and at Instituto do Oriente (IO), Universidade de Lisboa. and has written books and several articles about the Israeli-Arab conflict and Tunisian politics."

"As JIMENA prepares to release three landmark studies — including a national demographic study of Sephardi Jewish Americans and two assessments of Jewish day schools and summer camps in Los Angeles and New York — we are not focused on a headline number.

Yes, our study will show that roughly 10% of American Jews identify as Sephardi, according to Brandeis University’s Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies, but the real power lies in the recommendations, not the numbers: the action steps, the language changes, the cultural shifts and interventions these studies propose."

JIMENA
Jew Indigenous to the Middle East and North Africa

Jewish Demographic Research must be Followed by Meanaingful Action
By Sarah Levin, eJewish Philanthropy, May 9, 2025

Email Newsletter excerpts:
"...At the time of JIMENA’s founding, I was an undergraduate — one of the only Jews in my diverse friend group — grappling with my mixed Sephardi-Ashkenazi identity in the aftermath of 9/11. I didn’t feel like I belonged in any Jewish space, and I was searching for some indication that there was a place for me in the broader Jewish world. That same year, I read The Flying Camel, a groundbreaking anthology of essays by Middle Eastern and North African Jewish women edited by Loolwa Khazzoom. It changed the trajectory of my life. I began to understand that I fit into the messy, evolving space of a Jewish multicultural movement...pioneered by women like Khazzoom & Shahanna McKinney-Baldin, who planted seeds that are only now beginning to flourish.

...Language that has helped so many find their place in Jewish life is now being weaponized in intracommunal debates. Words like “Mizrahi” and “Jews of color” have become so politicized, so scrutinized, that they risk obscuring the very people they were meant to elevate. Instead of building bridges, we’ve become preoccupied with who gets to set the categories — who has the power of naming, who counts, who belongs and who doesn’t. Judaism itself is often completely missing from these conversations, replaced by a spiral of semantics...."

Honoring Sephardi & Mizrahi
Passover Traditions

Dear JIMENA Community,

As we approach Passover, we’re proud to once again share JIMENA’s interactive Passover and Mimouna Guide—a cherished resource that highlights the rich, diverse traditions of Jewish communities from the Middle East and North Africa.

The guide also includes a special section on Mimouna, the joyful post-Passover celebration rooted in North African Jewish heritage. Marked by open homes, sweet treats, and music, Mimouna reminds us of the importance of hospitality and community as Passover comes to a close.

We hope this guide brings meaningful connection to your Passover experience and inspires you to honor and share the rich heritage of Sephardi and Mizrahi Jews this holiday season.

From all of us at JIMENA, we wish you a Chag Pesach Sameach—may this season of liberation bring you and your loved ones joy, connection, and peace.

Warmly,

It is 80 years since 130 Libyan Jews were brutally killed during three days in November 1945 in Tripoli and elsewhere in Tripolitania. Shops and homes were looted, synagogues burnt down, such as the Zawia synagogue shown here, and property destroyed. This tragic episode, which is hardly known, was followed by a second pogrom in 1948. Over 90 per cent of Jews participated in the Aliyah starting in 1949.

What happened exactly and what were the root causes? Oral historian Vivienne Roumani-Denn has made a study of these terrible events and gathered survivors’ testimonies.

Chopping Onions on My Heart
On Losing and Preserving Culture
by Samantha Ellis

Samantha Ellis is a British-born playwright and writer. She is the author of How to be a Heroine published by Chatto & Windus in January 2014. Her biography of Anne Brontë Take Courage: Anne Bronte and the Art of Life was published in January 2017.

In her search for answers Samantha’s journey transports us from the clamour of Noah’s Ark to the calm of the British Museum, from the Oxford School of Rare Jewish Languages to the banks of the River Tigris. As Samantha considers what we lose and keep, she also asks what we might need to let go of to preserve our culture and ourselves.

Mimouna is a post-Passover celebration rooted in Moroccan Jewish culture, marking the return to eating chametz with tables overflowing with treats that symbolize joy, prosperity, good fortune, and abundance. Traditionally, families open their homes to friends and neighbors — and this event continues that spirit of friendship, unity, and renewal.

This celebration is held in memory of Zachary Nelson z”l, who brought the Bay Area Jewish community together each year for his own cherished Mimouna gatherings. Zach’s legacy of family, heritage, and community lives on, and we are honored to continue this beautiful tradition in his name.

All are welcome — come for the moufleta, stay for the music, and be part of a celebration that connects generations.

The republican party is no friend to any non-christians and I am baffled how Jewish leaders fail to see that. They are using Jews to cosplay their end times fantasies, and nothing more.

"The Trump administration's halt to all refugee programs — except for the one serving white South Africans — has trapped more than 700 Iranian Jews who have applied for asylum as persecuted religious minorities.

Their advocates in the United States are desperately seeking a champion in Congress. But a March 15 deadline to reauthorize the Iranian religious minority program looms.

“I'm alone here in the United States and my family is in a bad situation,” said one Iranian Jew who arrived just weeks before Trump's inauguration. “I'm praying that maybe Donald Trump comes to understand the difference between Jews and minorities and everyone else in Iran. All Iranians are not the same.”

JIMENA
Jews Indigenous to the Middle East & North Africa
New Report Sheds Light on the History & Dispossession of Iraqi Jewry

For over 2,500 years, Jews thrived in Iraq, shaping Jewish life through their contributions to scholarship, commerce, and culture. The Babylonian Talmud, a cornerstone of Jewish law, was written in Iraq, and the Jewish community played a vital role in shaping the region’s history. However, by the mid-20th century, state-sanctioned persecution & violence led to the forced displacement of over 135,000 Jews, bringing an abrupt end to this chapter of Jewish history.

The JJAC report reveals that assets, institutions, and property seized from Iraqi Jews totaled over $34 billion in today’s valuation, underscoring the massive financial & cultural loss endured by this community. Despite this, the story of Iraqi Jews remains largely ignored in discussions of Middle Eastern history & population displacement.

This report is the 2nd in a landmark series documenting the experiences of Jews from Middle Eastern & North African countries. The 1st report, released in December, focused on Syria, and additional reports on other MENA Jewish communities will be published in the coming months.

At JIMENA, we remain committed to preserving & sharing the histories of Jews from the Middle East & North Africa (MENA), ensuring that their experiences are recognized & acknowledged. JJAC’s reports are a crucial step toward addressing historical erasure & advocating for justice.

I Feel Most Persian at the Shabbat Table - As a Jew, it's not safe for me to visit Iran. But through my Nonna's recipes, I can still hold my ancestral home close.
By Anna Rahmanan, January 10, 2025

Article: heyalma.com/i-feel-most-persia

"Forced to abandon her life in the Middle Eastern region as a direct result of her being Jewish back in 1979 during the Iranian Revolution, when the monarchy was toppled & the Islamic republic was officially established, my nonna’s fond memories of her country of origin don’t seem to be tainted by the antisemitism that has defined Iran’s politics for the past 45 years.

...Iranian dishes have, in a way, assuaged my feelings towards a society of people that I associate with heartbreak. I cannot feel tenderness for a government that so harshly kicked out my relatives because they were Jewish, especially since the politics...don’t seem to have changed..."

From WLCJ:
From the Desk of Israel’s Chair
Dr. Esther Javetz
Sociology

"...During the 1940’s most Middle East countries expelled their Jews. Later, it became uncomfortable for Christians to live there. A case in point is the city of Bethlehem that used to be more than 80% Christian. Right now, it is about 10% Christian. (Wikipedia).

In Israel, more than 20% are minorities, of various ethnic and religious groups. Israel has the Law of the Nation, declaring it the homeland of the Jewish people, however, as individuals all citizens and residents have equal rights. All the blame of “ethnic cleansing” is actually happening in the Arab world."

#Mazeldon #Jewniverse #Jewdiverse #MENA #Mizrahi #Sephardi #JewishHistory #Jewish

“City upon a Hill” became a term used by several presidents to refer to American exceptionalism... (source: City upon a Hill Wikipedia). It was President Reagan who expanded the imagery to say: “It was a tall proud city built on rocks stronger than the oceans, wind-swept, god-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony & peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce & creativity.” American life, with its diversity & equality for all, was put forward as an ideal for this country & as an “export” idea for the world. However, after so many wars (Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, ISIS) and so much blood and tears, it seems that only Europe & Israel are following the model, and it does not copy itself across the globe. What is the reason? Sociology.

Democracy (one person one vote) and diversity can thrive only when a country is made up of individuals or nuclear families. The Middle East and North Africa are still tribal for the most part. Additionally, Islam as a culture & religion is not tolerant of other regions.

The tribal social structure creates tight groups with inner connections, and people do not make up their minds as individuals. Especially when endogamy is practiced (marriage within the group). This is happening in the Palestinian groups of the West Bank in Israel, where a girl from Hevron for instance will be married to one of her cousins in Hevron, and will not go anywhere else in Israel or its neighbors in spite of ethnic & cultural ties...

Decades ago, we lost Syria’s vibrant Jewish community, a crucial part of our heritage. We cannot afford to lose more of our precious minorities. Together, we must work and pray for a Syria that embraces all its people, heals its wounds, and offers millions of refugees a chance to return home.

A peaceful, democratic Syria could also pave the way for our Jewish community to reconnect with the land their ancestors lived in since the days of the Bible. This is a historic moment—an opportunity to build a brighter, united future for all Syrians.

Sincerely, Hadeel Ouies

Dear JIMENA community:

Ten days after the liberation of Aleppo, the city I called home for much of my life, my family and friends in our Christian neighborhood finally feel safe and are returning to normal life.

Yet, as Syrians, we face a profound challenge. The alternative to Assad—an Islamist government—frightens many, but the horrors uncovered from Assad's regime leave us equally shaken. The mass graves in Saydnaya prison, where hundreds of detainees were killed, stand as chilling evidence of brutality that threatens to tear apart Syria’s delicate social fabric.

As Syrian Americans, we call on the U.S. government and the international community to champion a secular, democratic Syria—one that respects diversity, protects minorities, and fosters peace with its neighbors, including Israel.
