so I was trying to make the hood from assassin's creed and it was going ok until I missed one part in the instruction booklet that clearly said do not topstitch the "beak" until the lining is sewn in and -- yeah I'm just gonna try again tomorrow
I'm going to a filipiniana wedding in April. now the bride didn't specify what time period and I'm low-key bored with the terno butterfly sleeves so im thinking of a modernized maria clara (with an elaborate pañuelo) or even my take on precolonial attire? 🤔 #sewistsofmastodon
🪡🌼 #handmadecrafts floral vest
used cloth from a decluttering sale, flour sacks for the lining, recycled buttons from old shirts, and pattern from sew.mii. shorts are thrifted and repaired.
struggled with the construction a bit but learned a lot about clean seams and lining; also the first time I used buttons in a project.
realized I forgot to take a proper photo until we got to the train station, thus:

🪡 leather and lace
stevie nicks song title-inspired dress made from a thrifted faux leather shirt and lace from a decluttering sale. the skirt's lining is plain katsa (used flour sacks). originally a wrap blouse, I couldn't find bottoms to match so I turned it into a dress. ended up really liking the length. this is zippered at the back.

🪡 made a giant flower top from old cloth and paired it with a thrifted skirt and marikina mesh mules
⏳ around 3 episodes of supernatural (honestly an easy project I can make this faster even while distracted by the winchester shenanigans)
🗒️ use lighter cloth next time

I have a #fabric question for the #sewistsofmastodon. I have this cotton that is really rough and itchy. I'm not sure why it's like that, but I need it softer if I want to make something with it. Is there a way to wash it soft? Can I use vinegar on it? I use vinegar for my wax prints and it always comes out softer, but I do that to help remove the wax. Will hot water and vinegar work here as well?

A4. I post my makes up on instagram (@fakoriginal) and keep a hard copy diary for my sewing (with photos). I used to use ravelry for my knitting, weaving and spinning before the 2020 seizure debacle, so moved stuff to my own website for a bit, but dropped that last year when I shut the designing business down (the hosting costs weren't being covered). #MakersHour #SewistsOfMastodon https://www.instagram.com/fakoriginal (it's mostly running related).
A3. Brief periods of 'Pardon?!' interspersed with much muttering about there always being another pin. Way more time is spent securing and ironing than actually running the sewing machine and/or overlocker.

A1. Hello, I'm fak and have been sewing a Morgan half zip hoodie with zip pocket and welt pockets in a delightful navy blue fleece fabric with bunnies on (no pics yet). #MakersHour #SewistsOfMastodon @makershour
#sewistsofmastodon my friend asked me is it normal for fabric to shrink in the wash. I said yes of course. Then she asked me how much shrinkage should she expect for curtain fabric.
I have never made curtains. Anyway I told her all I know about is fraying, because I don't have a dryer and I use mostly cotton. Shrinkage is negligible if you line dry everything. Then I said to look it up, because it will change depending on the weave of the fabric and the type of fabric.
I know she's asking me, because I sew a lot, but that's out of my wheelhouse. Was that the right thing to say? I think I made it worse.

Can't help giggling at #TheArchers reference - 'Tilly and the Buttons'
Since the showerhead is installed, and the pockets are interfaced, I suppose I should finished this dress.
Is that something y'all other #sewistsofmastodon do with your stretch pockets? I'm not allowing them to stretch too much. I started interfacing them two years ago when I made a jersey lined sweater dress, and it sorted of stuck.
I feel like they aren't flimsy things that are useless to me because now there's some support attached to them. I like to anchor them to the front as well if I can with twill tape. I have every intention of putting all the things in these pockets. Please tell me I'm not weird for being this pocket focused in my #sewing. I'm tempted to press some stay tape over the back of the pocket opening on my skirt.

Officially #sewing for winter 🥶 I'm wearing a #monroeturtleneck (free Tessuti pattern) that I made of striped cotton jersey and my super cozy #wikstenunfoldingjacket . I can tell these are going to get lots of wear and I may need to make another for rotation (esp. the top).
The jacket is XS and lengthened by 20cm to accommodate a long light down jacket underneath and it's the first fully-reversible garment I have ever made.
I used a combo of cotton rib knit from @darncheapfabrics Fitzroy and printed cotton (almost like fine corduroy) that some lovely person gifted to me a few years ago when we first moved into our current suburb. She and her husband are cobblers and have a shop in Kingsville. I went over to have a few pairs resoled, had a long chat with her, and when I mentioned I was learning how to sew, she gave me a bunch of beautiful cotton and wool fabrics that she had been wanting to de-stash.
Keep warm, Melbourne!

I sewed a few projects since I last posted but am particularly happy with this Kalle Shirtdress (pattern by Closet Core). I’m @sewing work clothes for the cold months ahead so I lengthened this by 20cm. New things I learned with this project is #sewing a popover button placket and properly improvising inseam pockets. I was surprised the dress version of this does not have pockets (not counting the chest patch pocket).
I can’t think of a kind of garment right now that would not be better with pockets. Underwear? Swimwear? Dancewear? You can’t put pockets on a tutu, right?

lazy #SundaySewing - drafting out the athletic butt adjustment on a pair of shorts for my partner.
once again i'm appreciative of the mechanical drawing class i was required to take in 8th grade. we were taught how to properly use a ruler and pencils for drafting.
